    My Story

    Dear Fellow Members:

Please help! Don't know to work this forum.

At any rate, I have been drinking more than a litre and a half of wine a day for about 20 years. Not proud, but couldn't stop - it didn't even have an effect on me anymore.

Three weeks ago I went to the doc for severe muscle spasms. He gave me Baclofen 20 mg. and after a week asked him to up it to 40mg. I also suffer from anxiety and terrible food binging.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY!! After three weeks I am down to 2 small glasses a day, no anxiety and sleep like a baby. Can someone answer some questions as the doctor doesn't know I am now using this for my alcoholism.

    l. I have not lost one pound and am eating very little plus I am not drinking that 1800 calories a day. Is Baclofen a weight gainer?

    2. Will I just stay at this dose or will it soon wear off and I will require more?

I still can't believe it. Am I just one of the lucky ones? This wonderful drug should be touted from here to kingdom come.

Now I don't know to send this but am very much looking forward to interactions from my new friends.

    My Story

    :welcome: Cindy,

Congratulations on your progress. Regarding the weight gain, people on Baclofen either lose it or gain it....but no one knows why. I had horrible sugar cravings when I quit drinking and I have been on Baclofen (daily) for about 4 mths. Maybe you have replaced AL with food. I think I probably replaced the alcohol with sugar and carbs. My dosage of Bac started at 30 mg. per day and the highest was 90 mg....I am now on 60 mg. It makes me sleepy right after lunch and I take it before I go to bed and I sleep like a baby. I am AF because of Baclofen....it was a lifesaver for me. I suffer from anxiety, too....and on the days that I forget to take it, boy, do I feel it! Yes, you will probably need a higher dosage to be AF....probably 90 mg. or more per day. You will find that Baclofen will help with sugar cravings, too.

You can buy Baclofen without a prescription at a bunch of online pharmacies: Goldpharma, Alldaychemist, 4Rx, River Pharmacy.

The key thing to recovery is to lurk here....check out the Newbies Nest....it's a wonderful place.

One thing for sure.....I would still be drinking like a fish if it weren't for MWO.

Check out the Meds Forum and click on Baclofen....you will find all the threads and posts on Baclofen there. One of our members, Tiptronic, has been AF because of Baclofen, or click on members' names.....Moglor and Loop. You will see their success stories.

Best of luck in your journey and we look forward to getting to know you. Feel free to Private Message (PM) me if you need anything else.

      My Story

      Thanks Friend

      Dear Rusty:

Thank you for your lovely Welcome!

Because alcoholism is like being a leper, there are really no friends or family to talk to. Even doctors don't want to take patients with substance abuse. I know, because I worked for a few and was told to turn them away.

I have had my doctor for many years, he was the only one available at the time. He has never even seen my bare skin. My last two liver enzymes were very high so I had to admit that I was drinking more than socially. He basically told me to slow down and that was it. The Baclofen was an accident (due to muscle spasms, truly) and I don't know to up it. You cannot get any drug here in Canada without a prescription.

Twice before, I gave up drinking for about 5 months with the help of about two pounds of jujubes a day. Yes, sugar does take the place. However, the Baclofen has even stopped my desire to eat and I am walking every day. In fact, I am so shocked at not having lost even a pound, I thought my scale was broken so I put a statue on it; AND ALAS IT IS NOT BROKEN. How can I find out if 40 mg. per day can make a person gain weight?

Again, thank you so much for the warm welcome and making me feel like I actually belong somewhere rather than being so alone in a world where alcoholism is still so misunderstood.

      Pal,

      Cindy

        Hi there Cindy :welcome:

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the meds but there are plenty on here who do, maybe you could check out the meds thread? On the sugar thing I ate a lot of ice cream when I stopped but have managed to cut back on that - not entirely because I feel I deserve a treat !!

Anyway glad you are on board and good luck

Enjoy today - there will be no other one quite like it....

          Welcome Cindy!!

I am not well up on the meds but there is a section dedicated to that, I am sure you will find the answers to some of your questions there.

I just wanted to welcome you to the boards, hope you stick around. xx

            My Story

:welcome: Cindy. I've only been here a few months and it doesn't take long to start finding your way around the different boards and threads.
I'm so happy that the Baclofen is working for you. I'd lie down and roll over broken glass to get Baclofen on prescription, so who cares why it was prescribed. Grab the brass ring, girl!
MWO has been a life saver for me. I did the one and a half litre of wine a night thing for a few years until I had a breakdown and cut down to binge drinking.
Best wishes on your journey. You'll find love and support and understanding here.

              Thanks Friend

              Dear Fellow in Crime:

Thank you for welcoming me. I have spent all last night and don't know to get my messages or into the threads. Can you help me? Can you walk me through it from the very beginning?

Well now, aren't we all different!! I would give anything to be a binge drinker rather than one that has to drink every day. Most of my fellow drinkers are bingers and I envy them.
They don't have to get up each morning and bite the hair that bit the dog. (have I got that right?)

The alcoholic I was married to would drink rye solidly for days and then not drink for a week. I had to keep on going. I am definitely the worst type. I HAVE TO KNOW THERE IS SOMETHING TO DRINK AT HOME. With binge drinking you get a break - SO GOOD FOR YOU!!

Baclofen is wonderful. You just go to the doc and say you have terrible muscle spasms at night and your girlfriend had wonderful results for Baclofen - you don't say it is for alcoholism. As well, I have no desire for sweets - I couldn't even eat a piece of my birthday cake.

Congrats to you! My big problem (and I am only eating about 750 calories a day), is that I am gaining weight and I am walking every day. I have tried to research this but nobody seems to have an answer. Only a small percentage gain weight - wouldn't you know that would be me.

Thanks again, would love it if you kept in touch.

If you are really only eating 750kcals a day, every day then you should be losing weight. Most people who don't lose either don't realise how much they are eating, or have a medical condition such as lazy thyroid.

Welcome, Cindy. I'm pretty new here too but just wanted to say that you've landed in a great place. I attribute it to my 36 days of freedom from alcohol!:welcome:

Cindy (or anyone out there) is Baclofen the same thing as topiramate ?? I just got the book MWO today and have read most of it.

                      My Story

SML :welcome: I don't think I've seen you post before - just wanted to say Hi. There is a thread you can access on the front page of the site (link below)

Topamax, Campral, Naltrexone, Baclofen, other meds

People there are much more well-versed on meds. I know, though, that Balcofen is different from Topomax (not sure if I've heard of Topiramate). The people on that thread would know a lot more!

Just wanted to try to get you started - sorry I can't be of more help.

Best of luck!! Be sure to spend a lot of time exploring the website - tons of info but it's spread around!

                      Here is another good link:
