    How Much Did/Do You Drink

I drank 8 to 10 beers everyday. Finally had my last drink on Dec. 7, 2009. And I feel so much better now.
    Love and Peace,

It eventually escalated to a 75 cl bottle of vodka 3/4/5 nights a week and a litre on a Saturday until Jan 5th 2009, when I finally got a grip.

When I wasn't working years ago a 4 litre cask of cardboard craptastic would do me in 24 hours. Then once working I "cut down" to one bottle and 6 beers on work nights and 2-3 bottles on weekends + beer if the damage hadn't been effectively done.

Recently I've been missing work 1 or 2 days a week due to hitting the 2+ bottle mark regardless of the day of the week. Weekends have been a write off and I literally have to talk myself out of buying a fourth bottle sometimes. I don't buy cask wine because I know I'd drink it all.

Of course I know it's sheer madness... that's why I'm here!
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run.

          Hiya Kaje,

Your situation sounds much like mine just before i stopped. I was taking a lot of time off work in the end, and i began taking longer stretches of time off. My last stretch off work was almost 2 months, when i'd got myself in a rut and preferred to stay home drinking from whenever i'd wake, till stumps. I could see me losing my job, and in no condition to get another one, and the roof over my head. The options for me were the street, or pull myself out of the nosedive, and the hell. I set a date to return to work, (on the monday a few day's away) , and last drink's were on the saturday night. Luckily i convinced my boss to keep me on. Just be careful.

          Great to see you here.

          Best wishes all.

I remember several years back to wake up to realize I had finished a small bottle of wine. I was horrified!!!

Now, I consider ONE bottle of wine a GOOD day!! Funny how it creeps up on you. I drink wine and vodka. I can easily drink about 10 drinks or more. Enough for me to be on here and want to stop it!!

Once I start I don't stop either. I think that is the most important thing to recognize. WHAT we drink or HOW MUCH we drink or HOW OFTEN we drink are not the most important points. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DRINK is the important thing, IMO.

I couldn't predict what would happen when I drank. My best intentions would be out the window nearly always in the later years of my AL abuse. One bottle of wine, two or three, who knew. I sure didn't. Once I started, the only thing that was predictable was that I would want more.

Just as a random trivia point - I've heard lots of drinking histories and I'm wondering why it seems a high % of people end up with Vodka. Is it because we think people can't smell it? (:H:H:H) Or some other reason? I know everyone doesn't end up drowning in Vodka but it seems many do. I was a wine and vodka junkie too in the end.

ETA: I suggest resisting the temptation to compare your own volume / pattern of drinking to others, and then drawing the conclusion "I'm not that bad." "I'm not that bad" thinking kept me stuck in active alcoholism for a long time. I could ALWAYS find someone who drink more than me, started earlier than me, had worse consequences than me, etc. That didn't make me any less of an alcholic.

                    This is a great thread!

Doggygirl-you asked about why people progress from wine to vodka. I asked that question to my addiction specialist/therapist once I graduated from wine to vodka and she said it's because it's a progressive disease. It takes much more wine to get a buzz going where vodka is much more powerful and faster. I can attest to that. For me, It had nothing to do with the fact that I didn't think people could smell it. It was the effect I wanted. Sip vodka....never....I loved loved loved to chug-a-lug it on the weekends. During the week, no, because I travel too much and didn't want to risk my clients seeing me hungover and reeking of booze. EEWWWW. When I was alone a weekend day, I would go to town!

Totally agree. While my drinking doesn't seem to be as heavy as some people here, it's enough to be interfering with my life, my job and my health... and most importantly.. my happiness. I used have a friend who was waaaay worse than me. I think that's when I began justifying my drinking and became a regular heavy drinker.

Re. the Vodka. It would never be my vice. In fact I completely avoid spirits because I just don't like them. Though I guess everybody is different.

DG - the vodka for me was the same as for Rusty. I could just get trashed a lot quicker than with the wine.

I went from wine to vodka as well. It seemingly went farther for me. Gave me a different type of high. As for smell.... I use to believe in that myth as well. No one would know if I were drinking. Reality of it is I smell it all of time on people while out shopping. I really notice it. But I also have a nose for it!

Vodka and Gin were my choices when I wasn't in a beer mood. I also liked Absinthe quite a bit, but it was expensive, so I didn't drink it often.

I gravitated to vodka for two reasons. One, I don't have to have any mixers on hand. With gin, I always made martinis, mainly for the ritual, but the small (3oz, hah) martini glass just wasn't cutting it.

Two: There was always something of a romantic aspect to Russian vodka that appealed to my vision of myself as a tortured soul; Withering away in the darkness with an old fashioned glass filled with vodka and a little ice.

                            Edit:

Choochie, thanks for the PM. I am doing very well, 48 days sober! I am posting my updates in My Baclofen Experience on the meds board.

Hi All, I have already posted my "amount" of drinking, but I have to agree with DG and others who have said be aware of "comparing". I did that in the beginning and thought -- "Wow, I'm not that bad!". Which then led to "Maybe I can moderate!" And inevitabley I'd end up drinking more than I planned at some point -- either drinking daily, or bingeing on a weekend, and then waking up one morning hung over and remorseful AGAIN. The real problem is not being able to stop after one drink, and thinking about drinking when I'm not. So, for me, it's not a matter of how much -- I just can't have it in my life. Thanks for all the great posts!

i must be at the lowest end of the spectrum here? i only consume like 2-3 glasses (wine or champagne) per night. if we have beer its the same, 2 or 3, hard liquor which we dont get too often, like 2 mixed drinks with like 2 shots worth per drink?
