mostly wine and vodka for me too. vodka was cheaper and a quicker 'hit'. i also remember when i first drank a whole bottle of wine and was horrified. ha, later days 1 bottle was just for starters. ended up drinking 1, 2 or 3 bottles of wine..... whatever i could drink before passing out. or vodka if i had it. and yes the only thing for sure was that when i started i wouldnt stop until i passed out.... even if i started drinking slowly and sipping.... it was never long before i was glugging. CRAZY!

Hi everyone, I hope you are having a great day.
Sheri, your post really resonated with me. It is amazing how others have travelled the same path as us, in times in life. The one thing that came to mind, as a footnote to your post, is all of the really really bad decisions I made while drunk. Those are still haunting me at times, sometimes a little and sometimes a lot. Thanks for putting things into perspective for me with your post.

Wag, I remember being so excited when those came out, because no one could see how much I drank. And yeah, G, very classy I was, too--balloon glass, arty swirling, "savoring the bouquet" (and oh, those sexy purple teeth).
Summers, it was G&Ts or beer, plus wine with dinner (and beyond, secretly). I'm still finding beer bottles stashed around the house. Not so classy.AF since July 15, 2010. :applouse:

Personally, I think the comparisons here are important, especially for people who aren't sure if they have a real problem yet. None of us started out drinking 4 liters of wine or 24 beers, or a bottle of vodka a night, we all started with a glass here and there, a couple of beers. No matter how much you drink, if you think or even suspect it's a problem, IT'S A PROBLEM!
When I was first starting out on this road, I used to go buy two large beers (24oz) and that would take care of me for the night. It took a couple years before that built up to 3, then 4, then 6.. etc.. I used to tell myself "I'm not an alcoholic, it's just beer. It's not like I'm drinking vodka." Until one day I woke up next to the empty vodka bottle that I'd just bought the day before. Whoops.

at the height of my drinking, I would put down 25-30 beers. at the height of my self destructive early 20's, I would drink every night, but the weekends were nuts. I'd usually get a 12 and a 6, smoke pot, eat morphine all day, and every friday I'd buy 6 cases of whipped cream chargers. some might call me an addiction multi-tasker, but most people just called me a lunatic. I even had a ritual for the nitrous oxide. I'd point 3 fans directly at my face, and eat a listerine strip to ice up my mouth. then I'd take the hit, and every time I'd exhale, I'd say, "it puts the lotion in the basket." thank god I got that stuff out of my system in my early 20's! alcohol is terrible, but drugs really made me crazy.

Almost two years ago I broke my arm trying to do a cartwheel off a laundry basket in the living room. Pretending it was a balance beam. Trying to be a fun mommy. Oh, what a good example I was setting for my then 5-year-old daughter. My husband was traveling at the time. I had had a six pack of beer and a bottle of wine that day. (And I weigh about 115 pounds.) Since then I haven't had that much. I believe I am improving, and so far my goal is still moderation, but I do still occasionally (maybe about once a week, still too often) consume a couple too many beers. I am able to stick to a few rules, usually. I no longer open a bottle of wine when I'm alone. I haven't kept vodka in the house for about 5 years. But I know, even though I mostly drink only beer, sometimes it's still too much, and although not as often as it used to be, there is still room for improvement. I am better at stopping than I used to be. I have more good days and less bad days than I used to, and I am learning as I go along. Just the thought of a good nights' sleep is a great motivator. Oh, how I hate waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep. Having bubbly water and diet soda around helps, too. I know plain old water is better, but I really like Diet Coke. Anyway...thanks for sharing, everyone. I admire your courage! Best to you all...

Hi! I have been peeking into this forum off and on for years...I dont drink an incredible amount...but I know it is too much..and most of all I know it has a hold on me, not me on it! I am really healthy overall(thankfully), doing well, but the one thing that nags at me and lets me know I am not doing that well is the compulsion to have that drink in the evening...but it is rarely one drink, well hardly ever one drink. My friend was here for TG and man we just polished off the bottles of wine! I was aware of it, but just dove in(never during the day, or driving) but instead of feeling happy, I feel gross, poisoned, captured! We have kids and I know enough to know that they are at a higher risk of addiction just by watching us over indulge! I want more for myself and my kids...I want to be the one in control...Not the lovely glass of vino, which turns into something I just do without really the pleasure of flavor, etc... Plus, I hate how it takes away from my ability to handle situations with grace and clarity...how remorseful I feel the next day because I know I had at least one too many drinks! I really appreciate the posts I have read. I need to get motivated, and not just when I feel gross because I have been drinking a bottle of wine for a week of evenings(it's the holidays! ugh!) Some things I read that really ring true: "Having a sense of gratitude as opposed to deprivation" I think I hate the idea of being deprived...stupid since too much booze is what deprives me of too much! Plus the f Scott Fitzgerald quote "first you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you." Damn right! Ok, so that was a mouthful! Thanks for listening!

Marm, I definitely think drinking in front of your kids sets them up for drinking. And, so many people end up with a problem, it seems like it's certainly a big risk to model that to your kids.
Well, if you've been reading a lot, you don't have to be told that those of us here who are abstaining are liking our lives better without alcohol (not that it's without its challenges)............. it's obviously something you really have to want to do.
Someone - lost of posts around about the progressive nature of becoming dependent on alcohol even if you "think" you have control of it now???
Anyway, we are here for you both if you need us.

Before i quit, I was drinking 2 plus bottles of wine per night. And, I'm not very big.
In my earlier years of drinking (college), I noticed that I had a very high tolerance for alcohol. I could drink guys twice my size under the table. I later learned that this is true of many people who will later develop a dependency on alcohol.

Me too, momof3... often giggled and was 'proud' to be able to 'hold my liquor' like one of the boys. Friggin fool.
I also routinely drank 2 bottles of wine a day/night. Horrific thought, now.Okay, WHO put a stop payment on my reality check?
