As soon as my starter kit arrived I started taking the supplements, following the diet and exercise recommendations, listening to the hypnosis CD's, and NOT DRINKING. I also became very active in the followship that this support forum provides. I ultimately ended up deciding not to start the Topomax, but I followed all the other guidelines in the book to the letter. That got me my first 60 days of sobriety.
My journey has been filled with ups and downs. I have customized my personal sobriety plan with the addition of AA - I find the face to face fellowship helpful as well as the Steps which have helped me deal with baggage from my past and establish a more honest way of living than when I was drinking. But that's just me - don't be afraid to try things and find your own way!
Over the last year I have strayed away from the diet recommendations in the My Way Out book. I have also changed some of my supplements and gotten away from the amino acids that are included in "All One." With sugar back in my picture, my sugar cravings have returned with a vengeance. The science behind the My Way Out program suggests that sugar and alcohol cravings are strongly connected. I don't want my current sugar cravings to lead me back to AL. I think my brain chemistry needs some healing again, so I'm taking stock and going back to some MWO basics.
This is my long way of suggesting READ THE BOOK. Consider ALL of the recommendations and how they can help. Will power alone does not stop my cravings. I need more. The support on this forum is a very critical component of my sobriety plan. But there is more to it and I am just making my job of staying sober that much harder if I ignore the other tools available to me.
Julia Ross has written two books - The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure which I believe are very consistent with the My Way Out recommendations - I'm assuming based on much of the same research. I've dragged these books out of my closet too. I realized she has some video clips on Youtube which you might find helpful sorting out your own cravings, and helping you decide to DOWNLOAD THE MY WAY OUT BOOK and read it to understand the full My Way Out program. Here is one of Julia's videos - that are more if you like this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEOkeCJXUbk[/video]]YouTube - Julia Ross on Brain Chemistry and Addiction Treatment
If getting sober were easy, there wouldn't be a need for My Way Out, AA, Rational Recovery, SMART Recovery, Alan Carr's Easy Way to Stop Drinking, and all the other things out there. Don't be afraid to look under every rock for more help until you find what works for you.
It's back to the basics for me.
Strength and hope to you,
DG
