I'm starting my rest of the year sober challange today!

    Hi there peeps,

JUst a thought or two about counting days al free and then having a drink and discounting the efforts and the al free days already racked up. A lot of folk here fall off the wagon after some really decent al free time and then post saying that they have ruined their records. I would like to give another way of looking at this. In an ideal world when we decide that abstinence is the best way to go forward, an unbroken record would be great. But any new skill often means reverting back to old habits or not quite becoming accomplished the first time. And thats fine. Remember when you got your first bike. You hopped on full of excitement about riding it off down the road with the wind in your hair and the freedom that it promised to bring. But instead when you hopped on, chances are you fell off quite a few times. A little bit discouraged but with steely determination you got straight back on and after a bit of wobbling and maybe even the odd fall, you eventually got the hang of it and rode off into the sunset. Even so, there may have been times when you crashed into a fence and had a minor mishap.......I bet you didnt say to yourself that all of that crash free riding meant nothing and that you were hopeless? No you just accepted that sometimes you werent as steady and that all that meant was that you needed more practise. Please dont ever feel a failure because you had a drink, or that your plans went out the window. And dont ever feel that you have to leave these boards because of it. If you fall off that bike, get straight back on, ask someone to help you balance or get out your training wheels for a while......in time and with help and practise we will all be as steady as a rock. Love and Grace Saff xx

Thank you so much Saph. I was feeling discouraged even though since Nov 27 I have been AF every day except for 2 days. If I add that up its quite a bit more success than saying I'm now 3 days AF. You are absoluterly right, I am now back on my bike and continuing to rack up AF days.

        Have a great day everyone!

Great stuff, thats a much more realistic way to look at your successes than reverting back to day 1 after a lapse. onwards and upwards my fcriends xxx

Ok so I am having a problem. . .I went for 10 days then drank. . .then 2 days. . .then drank. . . then 1 day then drank. . .see the problem. As soon as I cave we are really back to square one with this. I have made a go of it several times and I make it about 10 days then at some point I just say screw it this is to hard and away we go for 3 or 4 months and then I try to stop again. I want to make this stick, I just don't know how. Any tips on how to make it past 10 days would be great! Thank everyone for all there support!

I think you just have to question yourself every time your resolve fails- " Why am I thinking about drinking"- " Why do I want this" - and know what the outcome will be- I have been doing this lately and it helps to put it mentally out there- for me it's a mental addiction. If you "allow" yourself to cave - you have to question why. The 'toolbox" had a post about ' urge-surfing" - it helped me a bit- to question why I wanted to drink. I even removed myself from the usual places I would be-my "comfort zone" i.e. tv room - I switched up my routine of a glass of wine or a g& t at 5 or 6 pm- I plopped myself on the computer instead with a cup of tea and started making new playlists for my ipod-distracted myself from the witching hour with a different routine. It really helps.

Saff- Loved your post. Let's celebtarte the victories not delve on the defeats. Defeats make any person/team stronger.
Jenn- I know your feeling. My ultimate goal is to be able safely have a couple drinks and not go to the next level. I'm usually good after about the same time period 10 days or so and can have a couple drinks. I get cocky and the next night (because the night before I was good) acouple more than a couple and the pattern starts to repeat. Not sure on the answer but let's all try and make this work.

                  Hope everyone is doing well!

Hi Jenn/Sharky, I am right with you guys. I am just trying to make the days inbetween longer at least! What my counselor said, is that even if you drink one night after 21 days or something AF, then it opens the door in your mind (mental addiction) that you handled that okay, and it's okay to do it again. Unfortunately, as you have said, pretty soon you're on a 3-month drinking every night thing and back to square one.

It's really hard, but I really think the ODAT is key. I really wish they could just come up with a magic pill that worked for everyone the way that Topamax apparently worked for Roberta Jewell and some others.

Anyway, my plan is ODAT and hopefully one day I'll wake up and realize I'm not even thiking about AL anymore. I think that will at least take a year. Not really sure as I've never made it that long!

                    Have a great evening all!

ok I went and got some L-glutamine from the health food store. 500 mg capsuls and took my first one. From what I have read they really help with cravings. I don't expect it to work over night but I will give it a week and see what happens. I will take 1 when I wake up, one at 3 and one before bed. If they don't seem to work I will take 2 capsuls at those times. Recomended dose is 2000 a day so 3000 should be fine if needed. I found it at GNC for 5.99 and my HSA card worked so yeah me!
