Why is this getting harder!
Hey guys, I realise that the chance of relapse and the constant mental struggle to not drink is apart of our daily lives, but I really did think that this would be hardest in the beginning! Thus far each day I go without it seems to get harder, it was easier the first week, so far I am 10 days A.F, perhaps my resolve was stronger, I am still determined, however as I go about in my daily life I find myself getting more cravings more pangs then the day before, its very annoying, I guess I would like to ask, DOES IT GO AWAY?
Thankyousigpic

Why is this getting harder!
Congratulations on your double digits today. It is hard because you are alcohol dependent and you may now be feeling a bit healthier than you did the first week. It is sometimes harder then to remember why you want to stay abstinent. Keep up your guard. The discomfort may last several weeks or more. There are medications which may help. Some people swear by nutritional supplements. Make a plan each morning for being involved in something healthy at your most vulnerable times. Make a list of 10 things you can easily do besides drink and then DO them if you need or want to. I am at 1 year AF now. I used baclofen to get abstinent and stay that way. I still take a very low dose and carry one with me at all times in case I feel fearful that I will drink. So far I haven't needed it but it feels like an insurance policy to me. Good to have in case. Just knowing I have it makes it easier to stay abstinent. On baclofen many people find it fairly effortless to stay alcohol free.

Hi Wintyr,
Congrats on your 10 AF days, great job!
The worst is over, things will get easier for you.
Are you using the Hypno CDs? They really helped me to relax & change my thinking. When you stop thinking in terms of deprivation & start thinking in terms of gratitude everything changes!
Try making a gratitude list. Think of all the things that have changed for the better since you stopped drinking ie no hangovers, clear thinking, extra money in your pocket, freedom from guilt & anxiety, etc.
Hang in there, you're doing great

It goes away, really it does. You just have to make sure you have a plan and stick to it. It is no picnic, but the outcome is well worth it. Life is just better sober.February 27th, 2013. A New , Successful Start. :h
When everything seems like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top!!

Why is this getting harder!
Hi hunni,
i found this too. It started to get easier between that second and third week. I'm now 2 months sober and i still get days when i struggle. I find it's when i'm tired tho.
Hold in there. The last thing you want to do is relapse otherwise you'll have to start from day 1 again and go through all the struggles AGAIN.
Hold in there. You're doing GREAT. Try keep busy!

Why is this getting harder!
The first 10 days back in December was the pits, everyday holding on not to drink and it felt like all I was doing was holding on and not drinking. . . fast forward to now, I started taking L-glutamine 15 days ago and have not had one drink, I have craving and pop the l-glut and in 10 min I remember oh yeah I had a craving 10 min ago, cool, glad its gone. It is amazing! I don't know if its because I am doing some thing active about the craving to make it go away (the placebo effect) or if the l-glut really works but please try it, it will make life so much better if it works for you like it did me! Good job on your days! You always succeed if you never stop trying.
Everyday we choose the direction of change.

Why is this getting harder!
Wintyr,
I'm right there with you. Day 11. First day, no problem as the booze was still in my system. First 7 days a little hard, but nothing I couldn't handle. This week seems EXTREMELY hard! I had a huge trigger yesterday afternoon when I met with a client. A woman about my age, 49-50 and we were going over paperwork. Her face had that "red face" alcohol look. Now instead of thinking...oh thank gawd my face has toned down quite a bit...I had a full blown craving to finish up the paperwork and buy a bottle of wine on the way home. Isn't that horrible!!!!! I didn't because I had already planned to go to Zumba and my craving went away after that. Wow...it was powerful! Again, I tossed and turned all night and woke up with a slight headach and undereye puffiness....hey whats up with that!?? I didn't even drink, I'm not supposed to look like that!
Today I had some news about my job and there may be a big opportunity for me. The first thing that popped into my head was...I'm so excited, I can't wait to get home and have a glass of wine! Aaaargh! I want to scream out loud! It is harder this week.....hang in there with me!
Everything I need is within me!

Why is this getting harder!
I think the first 10-14 days were the hardest. Just getting the alcohol out of the system. Days 10-20 are hard as well, but I think it is more psychological as opposed to physical. If you can last to 3 weeks, it does get easier.

Thanks everybody for your advice and thoughts, your such an awesome group of people. I'm sure you can relate to the two edged sword of confidence thats flowing through my veins, in one sense when a situation arises that I normally wouldn't have the confidence to handle I think "stuff this I've given up the booze I don't have to take this crap" but that same confidence tells me Im allowed a drink on special occasions, I think Im making excuses to drink!sigpic

Hi Wintyr,
For me, it seemed to get better after 14-15 days with the cravings. Then I was suddenly shocked that I had gotten through them and felt better! Stick with it and see if it works for you. Also, like Jenny said, the L-Glut really seems to help.
