Help me make it through the weekend

over a year ago i achieved 6 months AF. then i decided that i would allow myself one night a week to drink. well as you can imagine, that one night lead to 2 to 3, and so on.

I am now on day 5 (of many day 5) and i need to get through the first weekend AF so that I can continue this journey of AF for many years to come.

I have scheduled a hot yoga class for Saturday morning and I'm not suppose to drink 24 hours before hand. I am pretty sure i will make it tonight but am worried about Saturday night. My family will finally be celebrating Christmas (had to postpone because of blizzards and then stomach flu) and there will be alcohol there.

any ideas, strategies, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I'm off to work, but will check back in tonight.

    Thanks in advance!

Help me make it through the weekend

    hi Mstall,
It's so easy to lose faith in yourself when you break a long time AF. After I did a year sober and screwed it up, I have lost faith in myself and never been able to achieve much meaningful time since without relapse (a month tops before the dreaded binge). But I know I need to do this and and will keep plugging away at it until I am AF forever - whatever it takes.

I have no tips for you, as I am not a social drinker - all the booze in the world at xmas or at the pub or whatever is not a challenge for me. For me the challenge is not turning to the bottle when things go wrong. But i will wish you lots of luck - try to keep in mind how good it felt to be AF and all the bad things that come with the booze.

Help me make it through the weekend

      Hi Mstall,

Im where you are, day 3 trying to get to that One week mark. Can you share with your family that you are not drinking? Would they be supportive???

Christmas is a joyous time (or it should be) so... how about focusing on family and the reason for the season. Focus on how blessed you are to be spending this time with them. Be grateful and appreciate the time knowing it means more sober than drunk.

And also, remember that once you make it through this challenege, things will get much easier on the other side. If you drink, you will regret it, and will have to start over Day 1.

Hope this helps!!! Good luck to you!!! Im right with you as well, trying to get to that week!!!
I LOVE MY SEROTONIN AND BOOZE SCREWS IT UP!!!!!

"Bikram's" yoga? I've been curious about that style. Is it difficult to endure the temperature?

As for Saturday evening ...sounds like you're fairly "fit ". Why not tell them you're cleaning up for 2011? Clean foods, clean living, etc. Good luck! :l

Ignore the booze or try feeling sorry for the people who are drinking and how they will feel tomorrow, and how you will fill tomorrow. Also get some L-Glutamine. When I had cravings at christmas eve I popped one of those and craving gone. I think it was because I was doing something physical to stop the craving instead of just mental. You will be fine just say I will not drink and no one can make you drink. Give yourself all the power!

Mstall- you sound like me-wish I had some words of wisdom,- - I have a picture in my head of where I want to be weight goal wise-by the end of March- I know that if I stop now- I will be at that goal- when I stop drinking the weight just falls off. Maybe just have a short term goal- and then build on it.
              It's always YOUR choice!

                Hi Mstall,

When I get to a tough day I just think to myself 'I can endure anything for a few hours and tomorrow will be better'. Really, for me, it's just ODAT and hoping that they add up. You should also try and draw on the strength and resolve that must come from KNOWING you did this for 6 months so you CAN do it again.

Good luck, you can do it!

Help me make it through the weekend

                  Hi Mstall :waving:

Well in the beginning if I had to attend something I would do the obvious and arrive late and leave early but if it's Christmas with the family that might not be possible. You could always say you have a bladder infection and are on medication for it and have been told not to drink, I have used that one a few times. I also said that I was on a one month detox and healthy eating programme and was going to stick to it for the whole month.

I'm sure others will come along with other ideas, good luck and congratulations on the 5 days but also on the 6 months. You know you can do it and attitude is half the battle.

                  Dewdrop :h
Enjoy today - there will be no other one quite like it....

Maybe when you get there have a soda water with fresh lemon or lime and focus your concentration on everything going on around you except the alcohol. Also, don't show up hungry and drink plenty of water all day Saturday.
2023 - focus, getting it done, and living the way it should be and being the person I need to be.

Some very good advice above. I always went for the arrive late, leave early and have an escape plan to a place where there isn't any alcohol.

Help me make it through the weekend

                        Thank you all!

I like the idea of a new year, clean eating, clean living. And it will just be about 4 hours. I'm going to stick with that and probably leave a little early.

It is bikram yoga and I love it! Though after working today I must have hurt my foot somehow so i'm not sure i'll be going tomorrow. It did however help me avoid the "Friday night, I went all week, I deserve a drink attitude".

I'm home, it's snowing AGAIN and the roads are crappy. I already washed my face and have my sweats on so i'm home for good tonight.

I will get through this weekend!
