day 16,out of the blue, big craving

Dying to go out for a pint. Monday has been my "Darts" night with the lads for the last 20 years, and very rarely have I missed my Monday nights out. Quit the team last November to make it easier for when I was attempting to quit AL (3rd Jan).
Would really love to go out now, and its only 5 minutes from my home :upset:
    BUT I,M NOT !!!!
I know its just a craving, but a strong one..
I think I will go for a swim instead and log on back here when I return...that should get me through tonight
All in all, am feeling great most of the time, this morning was lovely going to work feeling refreshed and ready for the week, and feel so much healthier, and having more time for my kids, so ITS ALL GOOD.....:thanks: for listening xxx

day 16,out of the blue, big craving

Sometimes these cravings come from out of the blue and hit us like a tidal wave, but thats all they are, a wave, they wash over us if we can hang in there. Are you taking anything to help with the cravings? I and many others find L-Glutamine a great help and its very safe to take.
    Check in later wont you.
Ethanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?

I'm right around the same time sober as you, Damo, and I totally understand what you are talking about. Sometimes the cravings completely sideswipe us, it's like everything has been going great and then it's, "Where did that come from?"

The best I can offer about this is that I've had a few of these and made it through, and when you get to the other side you look back and say, "I am so glad I made it through. I'm so glad I didn't return to the bottle!"

Also, reading posts from people in the throes of disaster-due-to-alcohol helps, and if you've made a post like this (I have) it is good to go back and read -- and remember why you wanted to quit in the first place. That's actually a strength of an online forum (there's strengths and weaknesses here just like anything else), that you have the ability to look up exactly WHY you don't want to go back, when your brain is trying to trick you and scream that you do.

Hi & welcome damo, you have come to a great community with lots of support & good advice,
What is usually most difficult for people when changing an addiction is coping with the sometimes relentless cravings. The initial days of withdrawels can be exhausting as cravings dominate thinking and interfere with daily routine. Many people give up change efforts because they feel that there is no way they can function without their habit as the cravings interfere too much with quality of life.

It is important to remember that cravings are normal.
We experience craving in varying degrees every day. And because your habit has been important to you for a long time, it may be unreasonable to expect cravings to vanish completely. What is hoped is that you will come to experience cravings with less frequency and that when they are experienced you will be able to react in a way that avoids relapse. Drop back in later damo as by posting & talking will certainally help.

thanks all, your comments and advice are much appreciated.
I think Mondays will be a little tougher than Tues/Wed/Thurs as I know my "drinking buddies" are only a stones throw away having a few pints. Although in the last few years I have found myself drinking alone in a different pub for an hour or so and only joined them after a few pints by myself. It was times like this when I start realising my addictions were worsening.

Enjoyed my swim, gonna sit down with a nice coffee and watch the golden globes with the mrs while flicking through here, which is always a great help.
          Thanks again

You're doing all the right things tonight. As the others said, cravings are normal. Wait them out - they will go away. The more you are able to resist them, the fewer and less intense they'll become! :goodjob:

Hi Damo - isnt that feeling when you open your eyes just the best?! I used to open mine in trepidation waiting to assess how bad i was feeling, was it a stinker or one i could manage a half normal day with? What a horrendous way to start each day! Well done on sticking with it last night, i promise it gets easier. Enjoy your hangover free day

Hi hunni, sorry to hear about your craving. Stay strong. I'm nearly 3 months af and the bloody cravings are back out of the blue, VERY strong and my mind plays good tricks on me coming upwith fantastic reasons and ideas to drink..
Just try to remember, why you've stopped, the feeling after you've drunk the feeling after youve sobered up, how your wife and kids will feel and think... why? is it worth it? really... No. It's just not. This is what i think everyday. i wouldn't want my little kids to see me like i used to be and you know what.. still sober. AL can't fight with the love in your heart.. and my loves pours out for my kids and most likely drowns them from time to time *lol*
Youre doing great and are turely an inspiration to those around... keep going XX

                              Hey Damo,

Good to hear that you battled the cravings and did something else nice instead. A bit of exercise and family time never hurt anyone. I think i am on roundabout the same day AF as you and i had cravings yesterday, too. strong ones for the first time since going AF this time.

For some reason, week 3 sober and also month 3 tend to be extra-bad for cravings, so just be aware of that and be extra vigilant about your mind telling you lies about having just one pint or making excuses for you to go to the pub etc. That's alky brain talking - it wants you to take a drink, and not just one.

Anyway, good job on not caving in and just continue to do what you're doing - make sure you do have a plan in place for when the cravings hit hard, whether that's swimming or calling someone, or whatever winds the hours down to get through it and stay sober another day.

Go Man United! (sure i'll get flamed for that. No, i don't live in Manchester, so... )
