    Worry

    I have been a worrier for all my life. I worry about things that I should never have to worry about. things that I have no control of what so ever. I'm always scared of the worst that could happen. Is this because of alcohol?

    I hope so and I hope when I quit drinking it goes away. I think it causes my panic attacks and my anxiety. I want to feel that happiness from deep within and know that I deserve all the good things happen to me... any suggestions or advice for me would be very much appreciated... Shiner

    Hi Shiner - an awful lot of anxiety and worry IS down to booze, however if it is your natural personality I s'pose miracles won't happen. I do know it has lifted for me and also those lovely little blooming moments of happiness that I truly hadn't experienced prob since I was a teenager.......prob when I started drinking if the truth be told.
    My suggestion to you would be give it a damn good go - at least 30 days initially and you will be so amazed at how different everything seems. Best of luck - it's worth it!

      Hi Shiner,
      No doubt about it, anxiety and even depression are a side affect of drinking and also withdrawal from drinking. Knowing this can really help to work through this, I think!

      Taking deep cleansing breaths really do help, as does drinking lots of water, I also add lemon to my water! Exercise, even walking really helps as well!

      I also know that taking supplements, Omega fatty acids, B-Complex and eating healthy are a huge help!

      All of life's ups and downs do not go away once we stop drinking. We will still have challenges, and ups and downs, yes, even heart break. But, without alcohol we can deal with all of this far better than when our mind and emotions are muddles by alcohol. Once we are clear of alcohol and it's symptoms, we are then far more able to do the work on ourselves and our lives that lead to a happier more productive life! But, it still takes work! You CAN Do It! It is WEll Worth the Effort!

        Alcohol supresses anxiety, but when the effects wear off it is much worse. It also generally is the cause of any problems which lead to anxiety, be it affects on health, wealth or relationships. These tend to ease with quitting drinking, or at least you are far more able to confront and deal with any problems you may have.

          Unfortunately alcohol consumption tends to exacerbate anxiety levels subsequently – firstly by causing disruption to the nervous system, secondly by creating situations likely to induce further worry. A spiral of increasing use causing increasing anxiety can develop.

          Anxious people tend to have a central belief about themselves as being helpless – they underestimate their ability to cope. Although, they are often aware that their fears are exaggerated.

          Five key questions can be used to challenge the initial perception of threat and the appraisal of your coping ability:

          ? What alternative interpretations could I make about this situation?
          ? What concrete, factual evidence do I have to back-up or deny these beliefs?
          ? What is the worst that could really happen, and how would that ultimately affect me?
          ? What positive action can I take to manage this?
          ? What are the pros and cons of me continuing with these negative thoughts I’m having?
          Coupled with some simple relaxation techniques like keeping aware of your breathing, you can soon lessen your anxiety to a tolerable level. If you can adjust the way you interpret the world, and thus not feel so worried about it, then you may not need to drink so much alcohol to cope.

              I am a worrier too-- to the extreme and a pefectionist-- always a high achiever. My anxiety worsened with drinking but it is still here after-- however, now I can focus on getting rid of the anxiety only andnot on ALs ill effects.

                My worries are out of control and I even make myself sick over them....it seems the only comfort I get is when I drink wine. 5 years ago I had a brain tumor and the removal of it has caused abnormal nerve activity. I live with butterflies in my stomach and I throw up often..then when I feel better, I have a glass of wine and it relaxes me...I can't keep doing this and I know that...working with a Dr. that is prescribing me supplements (I'm over meds that just cover symptoms). Just didn't want to feel so alone and felt the need to reach out.

                  You poor thing! Worry is horrible - I used to worry about everything - particularly at 3AM, definitely have improved since giving up the grog, but I do still worry - part of a personality I reckon. Sounds like you have medical reasons too tho and obviously I am in no position to know what should be done bout that, just make sure the doc is fully aware of how bad you are feeling? Sometimes just letting your feelings out here tho can really help!
