    I think I'll become a high-functioning alcoholic

I think DG summed it up well. Anyone can be a high functioning alcoholic for a while. But it catches up to everyone someday. No one is invincible, no matter how they appear on the outside.

This is how sick my thinking used to be! I had "drinking role models" like Winston Churchill, who navigated England through WWII while guzzling a bottle of brandy per day, and conducted many historically crucial meetings with Stalin and Roosevelt while drunk as a fiddler's bitch. "If he could do all that, why, certainly I can run errands around town while sipping from my gym-bottle of wine...!"

Oh, the tales we tell ourselves...and how astonishing our ability to delude ourselves!

I had the exact same thoughts. Even down to the Churchill bit.
Didn't last too long at it.

              I think I'll become a high-functioning alcoholic

I had an eye opener at the end of last year. I had often drunk under the influence, even sometimes with kids in the car, to my shame. But I congratulated myself that I had never been done for DUI.

I got a new job a year ago which involves travelling and has a company car. On one day I was required to travel about 80k to work and knew that i had probably had too much the night before and my blood alcohol level would be too high if tested. I got pulled over for speeding (only slightly but enough) and got a ticket. But the thing that stays with me is the fear as the cop approached the car. In NZ the cop comes to the driver car window and usually breathalises as a matter of course. I was thinking "This is it. I will lose my license and possibly my job." But fortunately for me he had stopped me on the main highway and didn't want to stand on the driver side next to the traffic. So he went to the passenger side and didn't breath test me at all. That was one close call and one that made me go AF.
