    Doctors prescribing baclofen in UK

    Hi there,
This is my first post,so was hoping someone may be able to give me some guidance based on their experience.I have done a lot of research and really want to try baclofen as it seems to have given a lot of people a cure to the nightmare that is alchoholism.
I am really desperate to get a prescription from a doctor as realise that this is a long term thing, but really nervous about approaching a doctor as I am a single mum bringing up two children, and fear their reaction and also the logging on my problem on my medical records.
Any help would be really appreciated I really am desperate to get my life back feel in control and become af.
    Thanks in advance

        Hi there
I haven't tried baclofen, for the same reasons as you state. I didn't want my doctor to know. However, I don't think there's any way round it if you want the meds. A lot of doctors are very understanding and glad you're seeking help, though. Medical records are supposed to be private and I don't think anyone else would have access to them. The doctor wouldn't normally report you to any social services unless someone complained about your ability to look after your children.

Have you tried to stop without it?

          Hi

I'm in the UK too and shied away from asking for help from my Doctor for the same reasons, being scared about the reaction and getting social services involved, ( The way I was turning up at school,I now realise it was obvious to anyone that I had a problem.) But in the end I realised that the only way I was going to get help was to talk to my GP and ask for help for it and the despression which I was suffering, it's on my records now obviously but the doctors only refer to it when I'm there for my anti depressants reviews.

My GP wouldn't prescribe any anti drinking meds at all for me and told me if I wanted to go down that route then I'd need to go to a drinking support clinic which I'd have to arrange myself which I found very disappointing. Personally I didn't choose that option it was hard enough talking to a Doctor at the surgery never mind going elsewhere plus it was across town and it was going to be hard to explain to my h/b where I was going, but I knew if I didn't stop things were going to escalate out of control completely.

Anyway after a few attempts, the support from here, the supplements esp L glut and the AD's I've finally made it to 50 days, which is the longest I've ever been sober and I never want to be that Mom again.

Like Dancing on said have you tried without, yes it's not easy and you may fall back time and time again, but it does get easier, especially when you see the difference it makes to your mind and your relationship with your children, I always denied that my children were suffering that they were too young to know..blah..blah..blah, but they are much happier and their bad behaviour has improved drastically.

Have you approached your Doctor about you maybe being depressed? I knew I was and for a long time refused to acknowledge and ask for help, but once I'd spoken to my Doctor about it all, he pointed out I was self medicating with AL instead of asking for help.

Hope this helps in some way.

            Back on topic

            Hi,

Doctors vary so much in their knowledge and in their approach, they are only human and there is so very much to know about health. That is why there are specialities.
There is no formal "alcohologist" title but doctors involved in detox clinics or units have more expertise and experience and they are there because they want to be.
After searching for a gp who would understand / help I finally realised I was shopping in the wrong store.
I would recommend anyone to go to a specialist clinic / unit / rehab. Not only do they know their stuff, they know ours and they care. They care about the anxiety, the guilt, the despair (I'm talking medical staff not religious rehab of which I have more negative experience).
I would also consult there before trying to go it alone, alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous.
I don't think there is any centralised, accessable depository of medical records. I know many of my own are gone since the surgery has long since closed and I had no copies.
Also it is better that your gp does know about any treatment you undertake to better avoid contraindications for anything he/she may be going to prescribe for other ailments.

All just my opinion of course.

            :welcome:

Drs in the UK are very cautious, partly through lack of knowledge, partly accountability worries. Also many are not experienced in addiction meds, simply because they are told to refer to the drug and alcohol teams.

I have naltrexone prescribed by my GP, and support from her for usage of this medication as per TSM. To obtain this however I had to go to see a private specialist (well worth the few hundred pounds I did pay I will add), show the GP it was working then she required a report from the drugs and alcohol Dr before she felt she could prescribe off label. Part of this was because she has never prescribed this medication before, never mind for this use. Once she had the support of the DAT Dr, she felt able to prescribe without come back. She also needed some advice from him regards the medication, and had to do some reading herself.

I can therefore understand why the problem of obtained medications do exist, it's a bit like cancer - your Dr will refer you to a specialist and that's how I see it.

Anyway I played along, did what I needed to do and did get the result I wanted.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.
