    retired and drinking more

I am new here and took an early retirement at 55. I loved it at first and still do except I drink beer all day! I am afraid of hurting my health but I can't seem to quit. I have drank beer for about 30 yrs and it is not fun anymore. I don't have the money for rehab. I love this site and would like to quit on my own. Can anyone give me some advice? Thaank you all!:thanks:

Welcome to this forum Spider. You have come to the right place to get help. Feel free to check out the https://www.mywayout.org/community/f1...box-27556.html and set up a plan. Having a plan really helps and also having 100% determination and commitment does help as well. Perhaps meds will be helpful to you. I would recommend committing to a 30 day af first and then go from there. Some mod after 30 days but others don't. Also there is a July AF group that is starting tomorrow and feel free to jump in https://www.mywayout.org/community/f9...-me-50734.html
I quit drinking on March 8, 2020. Taking it One Day At A Time and no more taking my quit for granted.

Also doing it for me. I got to stay sober for me.

Just consecrate on today and do what you can to remain sober for today and worry about staying sober tomorrow, tomorrow.

Hi Spiderweb and :welcome: Congrats on achieving early retirement! That's awesome.

I used to always think my drinking would get better if only I didn't have such a high stress job, etc. Like you, I found that with more time on my hands at various points in life, the drinking got worse - not better. I finally figured out that I was not drinking because of work, marriage, etc. I drank to excess because I am addicted to alcohol. End of story.

My sober journey began here at My Way Out in 2007. I had some bumps along the way but have been continuously alcohol free since May 22, 2008. And I was a daily drinker. In the end, I was often pouring drinks instead of coffee as early as 6AM. If I can get free, so can you.

I started by downloading the My Way Out book. I have no personal experience with the prescription meds, but I ordered the Starter Kit and used those tools + the diet and exercise suggestions to get me going. I really believe those things helped. I have since modified my plan with other things that work to help keep me sober.

Best wishes to you! Hope to see you posting around. You deserve to truly enjoy your retirement rather than sit on the sidelines with beer in hand.

          Hi Spiderweb,

With me idleness breeds temptation, I need to get busy. Any hobbies or interests that you have would certainly help getting your mind off of another beer. Welcome!

            Hi spiderweb,

Welcome & you're right, this is a good place!
As already suggested, read tthe MWO book & make a good plan for yourself. The program works provided you do some work

Staying busy, keeping yourself away from drinking temptations & triggers really works.

            Wishing you the best!

I can't give you any advice, as I'm new to this site, too. But, as a retiree whose drinking has increased, I understand. I don't quite know why that is, but it happens. Boredom, tired of looking or seeing meaningless things to do? I don't know. Why don't we choose to exercise everyday, volunteer, or pick up a new book instead of drinking? There's something else going on, and I'm trying to figure it out. I'll let you know what the secret is, if I find it. Maybe we're tired--tired of meeting others' expectations, tired of pushing and pushing, tired of everything, and just want to be left alone to do whatever we damn well choose. But, we know drinking excessively will have its repercussions, so how does that help us enjoy the good years we have left? What a conundrum.

I do know that this is a great site, with supportive folks who have lots of wisdom. We need to hang here awhile.

              Wishing you well.
