I have read the book and ordered the cds and supplements. I have been to the doctor and took my first dose of topomax yesterday. Here is praying that getting in will be the answer to my:new: way out.

Thanks Lush and Mike. I have to say I am very anxious about getting the rest of the material to get started. I was tempted to take more of the topo then prescribed but then realized that attitude is what got me here in the first place.

It is hard for me to trust people I don't know but you all seem to be so nice. I guess I am just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Can anyone tell me about their first few days?

the first few days

my first few days on topa:

I was very tired. I didn't want to drink. I didn't want to eat. I didn't want to work. I didn't have any cravings. My brain felt very empty. It was almost as if when the cravings left, there was nothing more. That only lasted 2 or 3 days. But those days were difficult. When I increased the dosage the second week, most of the side effects went away. I still have trouble recalling words (I notice when I do crossword puzzles) and I have a more difficult time learning peices on the piano because my memory is diminished, but the differences are minor. I am an engineer and do not see any affect on my work except that my spelling is atrocious (thank goodness for spell-check). I have been on the topa for nearly a month now, have been completely AF, and have not had any cravings. For me, it has been a miracle drug. Good luck to you!

Chile and all,
I just started the vitamins today and I did listen to the two tracks on the first cd. I did not drink today, but....
The only thing I did not do is get topo. Do you really think I should - like it works? I'm kind of embarassed to ask the doctor for it, if ya know what I mean> Also, I've been depressed for about 6 years and have taken mucho drugs for depression and am now down to one every other day so taking drugs again is really not what I'm really wanting to be about.

I copied the sections of the book that I thought would be helpful for the doctor. I also copied the Lancet report and the visit with the doctor went very well. He gave me a starter kit and I am set up to return in a month. I have taken the topo for two days and have not experienced any difference other then the side effect of forgetting obvious words. I guess for me if I did not do the entire program as prescribed and it failed I would always have that lingering doubt that I should bought all the way in. But hey, I am a very lost soul on this subject and am sure that there are plenty of others out there with a world of more wisom then I have. Whichever way you go I am pulling for you.

:welcome: Topomax is the drug prescribed by the My Way Out program. From what I have read is was created for the preventing of seizures but they are recently having sucess with it on controlling the crvings of problem drinkers. I do not know how to post the different articles available so you could just click on them. But if you type in Topomax in the search category you should be on your way.

what works for me

I started the CD's and all the supplements I could get in the stores here at the same time I started to topa. I've had a hard time getting the supplements from MWO (delivery problems or something, very frustrating). I must admit, I'm not very good with the hypno, my personality just fights against it. Some of the sups cause some problems for me so I've had to adjust the amount I take. I had my one month check-up with my doc last night and he does not want to increase my dosage of topa beyond 100 mg. He says if its working, let's stop there. I guess I should be grateful he gave it to me at all, I know some who won't because it's not approved for alcohol abuse. I hope it continues to work. I believe that all the other stuff helps, but I think for me, topa is the magic bullet.

go into the topomax/campral forum and have a read. Topomax is a drug primarily for treatment of epilepsy but a study showed a wonderful side effect.... it killed the desire to want alcohol. Suss it out on google. Too lengthy to write about it here.
