An older drunk back on day one. Who's with me?
Hi folk's,
Great going on all the AF time. Small steps, and easy does it.
How are you going there Halo? Post away about your feelings. That's what this site and thread are about.
I'm reading a good book called 'Learning to live again : A guide for recovery from chemical dependency'
by Merlene Miller, Terence T. Gorski, and David K. Miller.
It talks about how chemicals/AL/Other drugs affect us, and one chapter i find relevant in early sobriety is post withdrawal symptoms, what to expect, and how to manage them. It explains a lot about why we/our minds/bodies feel the way they do in withdrawal, and in post acute withdrawal, which the book states can begin 7-14 days after initial withdrawal, and last for varying lengths of time. It mentions how in the first week or two of abstinence, we are not making clear minded judgements (doh, really?!), because our system has been damaged, so abstinence is difficult in those early days.
This is no surprise to me (or probably most of us), as i've experienced it over and over. But, it gets better as our mind/bodies slowly repair. This is why i've seen that the classic 30 day target is a great one to aim for. For me, it means i go through that early crap, and strong urges of a fairly 'sick' and weak, foggy mind, and start to come out stronger at the other end, with a couple of victories under my belt. Of course, at around 30 days, more important work then begins.
Worth a read. It has lots and lots of tools and great info. It does err on the side of AA and 12 step recovery a little though, but is not a 12 step book as such, and has useful, relevant info regardless. Probably a couple of bucks 2nd. hand at Amazon or somewhere.
N.B. It says on the cover at the bottom.....based on the CENAPS model. Which i haven't been bothered to google as yet.
Keep it going y'all.

Hi everyone, sorry for the wobble. I didn't go to the shop, made it through the hour. I am not going to kid that it was easy, but it's so worth it to have a HF Sunday.
Juja, well done on 7 days, fantastic!
FF, thanks for your support, and well done to you for the weekend!
G, sounds like an interesting book. I am struggling through The Butt by Will Self at the moment, purely for diversion. I am going to look yours up now. The post acute withdrawal stuff sounds really eye opening, you don't really think about that, do you?
Day 13 today, going for a run as it's nice and dry and cold. That'll sort me out.
Clockwatcher, amazing work on your 14 days, does it really matter how you got there if you got there? Here's to 30, friend.
I forgot to mention, gave up the ciggies on Friday as well, I only smoked about 7-10 a day but it's been a breeze so far!
Hope everyone has a fab Sunday, here's to another AL free week! :l:lWhatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it! ~ Goethe

congrats Halo, you must have had a hard long night, but you did it. and you can do it again. I quit smoking 10 years ago from a pack a day and i thought that was the hardest thing i had ever done... but NO NO it doesn't come close to this struggle. But I can do it and so can you...

An older drunk back on day one. Who's with me?
Morning everyone,
Welcome, Stella. I hope you stick around. There are great people here who are upfront about their struggles.
Hi, Caper and Patrice. You've been here before, right? Please join us for more. All are welcome.
Dear BH, CW, G-man, FF, and me> Congrats to us all.
FF has been keeping up with my days better than me. She's keeping me accountable. I only note the day at night when I write in my journal. I've been through this so many times that I'm not spending too much time thinking about the days. I count each day as a success and go from there.
Belle, are you out there lurking?

Great going on your 15 days CW. I know a few folks on this site have said their bodies can take weeks to start feeling better, but geez, it's better than drinking, and things improve as we heal. It's been said that we abuse our bodies/minds for so long, that it's natural that it can take a little time to heal too. In my last longish AF stint, I remember in the first few weeks/months feeling tired at times, as well as energetic other times. I think it's the big job our bodies have in early sobriety to repair the damage done, but also to 're-wire' the systems back to how they were designed to function. Just my bloke off the street's take on it.
Welcome Stella! Congratulations on your 8 days alcohol free. (AF)
Hi Caper!
You're a star Halo. As are FF and Juja, Belle and AV. Keep it going and enjoy the journey of freedom you've begun. That's my attitude on day 5 here, anyway!
Easy does it. Off for a run myself. L8tr, Yo!
