I am pretty sensitive to supplements. My luck, I will try it, and, well, it will affect me when I am nowhere near a toilet! Making my list and going shopping tomorrow. Excited!

Magnesium Calm is a lesson in patience in the morning...truly... Good grief - smart phone autocorrect is enough to drive me battyThat popping sound you hear is me attempting to remove my head from my arse. It's been there for years so this may take a while.
Admitting I need healing. And I am not big enough to do this alone.

Wonder if I should do a thread on things that are online that supposedly help calm brainwaves... I've spent a small fortune on the various non-supplement items that are supposed to help...
maybe I will...and from a real key board - not the smart phone - this is so much harder from a smart phoneThat popping sound you hear is me attempting to remove my head from my arse. It's been there for years so this may take a while.

Want to get the supplements to absorb the best? Get Probiotics...
NO JOKE.
I met with my nutritionist and she told me they are starting to find that vitamins & supplements are vastly better taken on-board when a daily dose of pro-biotics is also taken with one meal. It seems - this also regulates BMs and weird - encourages slow steady weight loss over time. She said it was unclear yet why this was true but it was certainly true for a portion of the population.
So - I've been monkeying with this for 6 weeks as a test before posting...drum roll...
TRUE.
1). Don't wasted a dime on any that require refrigeration (read label carefully)
2). Don't waste a dime on any not enteric coated - stomach acid kills the probiotics off
3). Don't waste a dime on any with less than 5 billion active cultures as the kill off rates are high
4). Don't waste a dime on any with less than 4 active strains - you want to have a healthy balance of colonization
Take one a day - for the first week or if you have a stomach issue such as IBS - you may want to take one with Breakfast and one with Dinner. Many of these have strains that boost immune system response as well as help you uptake your vitamins. When you are building up your systems from abuse - this can be a big help. That popping sound you hear is me attempting to remove my head from my arse. For the record, acupuncturist (and he is a bit of a genius) told me to take all my supps first thing on empty stomach for best absorption. You were born with wings, why prefer to crawl through life? Rumi

Prairie... when you say it worked super fast, in what way? How many days AF are you? I've been slowly decreasing my alcohol intake so I don't have major issues. Someone mentioned taking Holy Basil, and I think that's really helped with my cravings. I think I'm more Psychologically addicted right now. Anyway - last time I tried to quit I used L-Glut with no resuls. Not sure how much I took, but it was in a pill form.

L-Glutamine (2000 or 3000 mg). L-Glutamine is an amino acid that decreases physiological cravings for alcohol. It is one the two primary energy providers that burn glycogen to provide fuel to the brain and stimulates many neurofunctions. L- Glutamine is naturally produced in the liver and kidneys. Alcohol harms the kidneys and liver, thus supplementation is vital (concurrently reducing cravings for sugar and alcohol).
From the Way Up Newsletter:STABILIZES BLOOD SUGAR & DECREASES ALCOHOL CRAVINGS
Glutamine does this by several mechanisms. When the blood sugar is low, Glutamine suppresses insulin to stop the further decline of the sugar levels. It also stimulates glycogen (a stored form of glucose) to be released to help increase the blood sugar to normal levels.
Further, Glutamine is a glycogenic amino acid which means it can convert to sugar for energy production, a process called gluconeogenesis. It is the most important such substance.
These blood sugar stabilizing effects may partially explain why it decreases alcohol cravings, as well as sugar cravings. In studies with alcoholics, 2000-3000 mg 3 times daily decreased the desire to drink, decreased anxiety, & improved sleep. It works best given between meals. Has been used for this purpose in daily doses from 6000-15,000 mg in 3 divided doses. Use upon arising, mid-morning & mid-afternoon between meals.
Giving Glutamine to rats decreased their voluntary alcohol consumption by 34%. When the Glutamine was stopped, their alcohol consumption returned to baseline levels.
Additionally, Glutamine supports pancreatic growth & function, increases the production of pancreatic enzymes, increases pancreatic weight, DNA, & protein content. This would also stabilize blood sugar & indirectly improve overall nutritional status..
Prairie's NOTE: I just found a chewie of Glutamine tonight at GNC stores called "RapidDrive Glutamine 2500 Power Chews" in Grape Berry. It tastes almost like a really super tart starburst (kind of gritty) - but it's 2500mg of seriously micronized, easily absorbed Glutamine. 60 ct. to a bag - $14.99 per bag - so if you are aiming at 5,000 mg per day - a 30 day supply. Totally portable. Worked super duper fast...
EDITED TO ADD MY MOST EFFECTIVE L-GLUT yet for absolutely SLAUGTERING cravingings.
Several people had mentioned on another thread how much more effective the micronized powder was - even over regular powder - which was still superior to caplets - as both hit the blood stream lickety-split. I had an URGENT reason to buy some yesterday as I got a last minute invite to go out with drinking buddies to drinks/dinner with no supplements on me. Into the weight lifter section - where that's what they had - micronized powder. Mixed with fruit water in the parking lot and this was far, far superior to all other L-Gluts at stomping out cravings and it didn't taste terrible. Texture was weird - but that or an AF night or a dead relationship? F* the texture. I am in.
Best L-Glut ever - believe there a bunch of brands - key is weight lifter section of the store - and micronized. Good Luck!!!I will be sober so I can be clear and remember being a mommy and so I can be in the best place God wants to place me. I will be here! now! FREE! 12.5mg Topamax AM&PM, Ativan until safe from withdrawal syndrome & for anxiety. Thank God I Am Done!

Prairie - I really appreciate all of this. Now... as a working mom of three under 7, can you just write me a shopping list of what worked for you? And where you shop?

For those who have seen my earlier raves about GABA - I will say my last run at at AF days - at the very end - I started to develop a weird allergic reaction to the GABA capsules - a flushing across the neck and chest - where everything got hot and itching. I thought it was a fluke the first couple of times - isolated it to the GABA from the other supps - took the GABA all by itself and whammo - there it was. I had to take Bendryl and thought about whether I needed the ER.
I didn't post about it as it was the night I started drinking again and went AWOL. I say that as someone else mentioned a bad reaction to it on the GABA thread...so - I'm putting here and will cross post. But GABA won't be on my supplement list anymore.
It could be fixative in the capsules - I don't know. I'm just not going to risk it.That popping sound you hear is me attempting to remove my head from my arse. It's been there for years so this may take a while.

As to what has worked best - for me personally -
For craving control - not by RX - it's the L-Glut powder by a MILE (which you can get at any GNC or VitaminShoppe) - Best by far is anything micronized to the smallest size possible so you can absorb QUICK. You can't have enough of this...you can dump it in flavored water and absorb in literally just minutes - stopping physical symptoms that fast. Dose higher with worse cravings...
For mind peace/relaxation - Vitamins - Magnesium and Inositol which is a B-Vitamin - both taken at night since Magnesium is going to make you - uh - poop. Better to poop that much first thing in the AM.
General recovery from AL depletion - we all need far more Vitamin B and D than your average Multi is going to give you - so a regular Multi plus a B Supplement and extra D3 OR a High Dose Multi from the Health Food Store
And because we tend to have depleted our neurotransmitters - which the B's will help - we also are short the EFA's that assist with neurotransmission - so a good FishOil supplement with high dose DHA is always in my cart.
When I winnowed back - these were the most essential. Everything else can be added in as needed - for instance - if you have the shakes real bad - do go get the Taurine. That popping sound you hear is me attempting to remove my head from my arse. It's been there for years so this may take a while.
