Ten tips for starting of,taken from my files and posted previously by another MWO poster, hope they help.
1. Reading My Way Out by Roberta Jewel, Dry by Augusten Burroughs, Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp, Seven Weeks to Sobriety by Joan Mathews Larson, The Easy Way to Stop Drinking by Allen Carr, and Addiction-Free Naturally by Brigitte Mars. All of these books really inspired me and helped me to formulate my plan for coping with the physical and mental aspects of withdrawal.
2. Using the 6-week starter pack of supplements from the Health Store .
3. Visiting this site daily for motivation & inspiration, sometimes numerous times a day, as well as posting.
4. Banishing negative thoughts, people and situations from my life as much as possible and maintaining a positive attitude even if I have to force myself.
5. Adopting a zero-tolerance policy for myself, including NO alcohol in the house. Drinking is simply NOT an option for me no matter how bad I am craving it or how stressful my day is or how difficult the struggle becomes...the solution is NEVER alcohol!
6. Avoiding all situations with alcohol, especially in the beginning.
7. Avoiding threads that focus on drinking escapades or people wanting to drink. This was also an absolute must for me in the beginning.
8. Researching everything there is to know about the disease, it's symptoms, and how to beat it. Knowledge is power!
9. Reminding myself every day, several times a day, that alcohol is poison to my mind, body and soul and that I no longer want to drink. Never forgetting all the negatives that alcohol brought to my life and the reasons why I needed to quit.
10. Eating a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, light protein and nuts, drinking lots of water with lemon, and walking outside every day.
