What made it 'click' for you?

I've been a weekend binge drinker (my good friend vodka) for the last eight or so years. Along with most everybody else, I've told myself over and over and over that it's time to stop.

Well, we all know how THAT goes! Next thing I know, Monday rolls around and I drag my butt into the office feeling like crap. I'm tired of spending the weekends drunk; I'm tired of missing or not enjoying events because of drinking; I'm tired of putting off projects around the house because I'm too tired/drunk to do them.

I've tried AA before, and really made an attempt to make it work, but it just wasn't a 'fit' for me. As other posts have mentioned, you have to find what works for you.

I can honestly say that I have a feeling of serenity after ordering the book and reading the posts on this website (I'm calling it my MYO epiphany). I think that mentally I'm finally ready to make the plunge because of that. Now whether it works out or not is an entirely different matter but my fingers are crossed!!

Anyway, has anyone experienced anything like that?

What made it 'click' for you?

    Hi AAthlete
Your epiphany sounds very like mine! About 2 months ago after yet another night that I felt terribly ashamed of I googled 'alcohol abuse' and this site came up! When I read peoples stories I immediately ordered the book and read it in a day. I have most of my supplements and got my cd's today just waiting on my topamax now before I start. The main thing I feel tho is that serenity and calmness too, I know I will not allow myself to get deeper into this problem because if I continue this time next year I will officially be 'an alcoholic'. At the moment I like to say I have a problem with alcohol .. big difference!
Yeah Im a bit sceptical as to whether it will work but I believe it certainly can't do any harm and the fact that we have gone to the trouble of ordering etc says we are finally committed to making some change and that in itself it great. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how you are doing xxx

What made it 'click' for you?

      Hi AAthlete, & :welcome:

Like Toby i found this site by accident on google but was hooked immediately.

In the past two months I have gone from 3 bottles of wine per day gradually down to non, i'm now on day 11 AF & feeling great.

When I made up my mind I didn't feel calmness, I felt excited & really happy, and I was really looking forward to feeling better.

All the best to you both, Love & Hugs, Paula :h :l :h

What made it 'click' for you?

I, too, googled 'Alcohol Abuse' in late November and joined in December. My choice of poison was vodka too... a bottle almost every other day! And since being here, I had 16 days of AF in a row in December (but then came the holidays - I know, no excuse but...) and now I have 13 days AF, and am feeling fabulous! I would still be drinking like a fish if I hadn't found such a wonderful place.

For me, it was procrastination and fear that held me back from making my decision to quit. On December 29th something inside of me said I was ready. I never felt anything like it before. Not even in December! I guess that is when it clicked for me. I honestly believe it was reading all of the posts here and the posting myself that built up the courage to finally go for it. Don't get me wrong... I do have some very tough days. I know it isn't going to be a piece of cake, but I want it soooo bad.... life without alcohol is getting so much better by the day! It is so nice to be in control for once instead of having the alcohol in control of me! Very empowering!

        Welcome again to you both!

You guys/gals are awesome (and inspirationa)l!!

It's nice to know others are in the same boat, and it's soooo nice to see all the positive encouragement on this website (as opposed to some where all they do is put each other down and argue about their views).

              Okay -- one more,

Toby, I can't tell you how comforting it is to know that this problem spans the globe. I guess we're all kindred spirits no matter where we live.

On a side note, are you a football fan (soccer)? Did you see that Beckham just signed a deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy that the with endorsments and salary is supposed to be 5 years/$250 million (sorry for the non-conversion to your local currency)!!

What made it 'click' for you?

                Oh crikes BLOODY BECKHAM!!!!!!!!!! sorry....ahem!
                Anyway...thread..yes..post melon..
Hi athlete (is this what you are, or what you want to be???) yup...ditto, ditto everywhere, and NOT a DROP TO DRINK huzzah!!! Found My way out while googling sauce problems, and haven't looked back...now on my 36th day AF which is nothing short of a bloomin miracle (had it happened earlier, I do believe it would have made an appearance in the book of the Revelation...just before the four horsemen of the Apocalypse).
You are right about the folks here too....the support is amazing, even if people don't agree with a comment, they tend either to ignore it, or post their views very politely ...it really is full of the most amazing bods, who truly care about every other user...I think that's what gives many people that 'click' when they arrive at the site...many people (myself included) have a good lurk about when they first get here, reading the threads and sussing things out, and this is also nice, that you CAN do this...instead of having to jump in and announce that you are an alcoholic to a roomful of people you don't even know, when it's hard enough just to admit it to yourself (and yes, I do know that this works for some, but it's always good to have other options for us shy and retiring types).
The information is so full too....the reading, cds, supps and the marvelous message boards, offer a 'something or everything for everyone' type thingy which is fantastic.....RJ is a marvel!!!
This site truly is the best...welcome

What made it 'click' for you?

Weemelonhead/Moosedrool (two quasi-words I never anticipated ever saying!), thanks for the welcomes!

In response to your question, I am a cyclist and complete for a regional racing team. Along with many other things, I'm sick and tired of wondering 'what if' when it comes to my training and performance. It kills me to look back over the years and see how well I've been able to perform while still hitting the bottle on the weekends (what do they call that, unrealized potential??). So, it's time to really see what kind of engine I have and that means that the booze has to go. Farewell fond friend - I shall miss you!

Glad to hear of all the successes that you have had. Truly inspirational and it gives me something to aspire to!

(p.s. I'm still trying to figure out how they are paying a fading soccer star that kind of coin when the highest-paid baseball player makes half of that! Only in America.....)

What made it 'click' for you?

Yeah...don't you just love the mooses name!!
Well...you have another great reason for quitting then athlete...I'm sure those legs would work a heck of a lot better without 18 pints sloshing around in them
And by the way...NEVER tell your old 'friend' that you will miss him...that only gives him an open invitation to come a knockin at your door again...tell him to GET OUT! and STAY OUT...he's gotta get the message...he's a thick skinned persistent individual. This is one house guest you need never be polite to!!!!
Has beckam ever BEEN a soccer star????? He's a good marketing draw, that's for sure...but as for footie...I'm not so sure...I always thought that Zinidan (spelling is poor, as all my footie knowledge comes straight from my partners mouth...I haven't a clue!!!) bloke was supposed to be fantastic, but he never seems to get many of the kudos that Becksyboy receives for some reason...oh well...more diamond earings for Posh!!!!
Keep going Athlete....and realise your unrealised potential!!! Weemelon

What made it 'click' for you?

I have to think of alcohol as the devil, if you will. One of the only things AA ever did for me was hand out a leaflet about how alcohol is the devil and it went on with a whole bunch of semi-cute things why it was. I wish I could find a copy! You'd love it!

hey AAthlete, the only people on this side of the pond who care about his contract are the media, a couple dozen soccer fans and maybe several hundred teenaged girls. i was hanging out with some friends last night and wasn't amazed at how many times this wasn't brought up in conversation.

the reaction of the normal sports fan in the U.S?

I gotta chime in here on the Beckham issue. Soccer is so not a big deal here in the States. We do not watch it on TV for fun. Period. We do not go and buy tickets to watch it in stadiums. I honestly think they are wanting to transition into the Hollywood scene and in fact I heard his wife is being hounded by Playboy to pose. So I think he took the measly 250 million to transition into a new career. Haven't we all??? I am worth millions from a similar sort of deal!

BTW, I think he is so flipping hot I cannot stand it. But enough about me.
I'm really easy to get along with once people learn to worship me
