    Serious Wake-Up Calls

    :new:

I have only been 5 days AF, but I finally decided that after many years of heavy drinking it was time to give this 13-year habit the heave-ho. I have built up so much tolerance to alcohol that I can drink 12 beers, or half a bottle of scotch, in the blink of an eye.

I have had some big wake-up calls recently about my drinking. I've can no longer deny the guilt I feel each morning I wake up with a hangover. Here are some of the biggest wake-up calls:

    1) I often think about what its doing to my brain. We all know that alcohol kills brain cells. That can't be good.

    2) My sister, whom I love dearly, is not talking to me because I drink too much.

    3) I am worried about my liver, which alcohol reduces to a fatty mess and damages beyond repair. My Grandfather died of liver cancer.

    4) Alcohol contains LOTS of calories and makes you put on weight. I have realised that, no matter how much I excersice, I will not get rid of the fat on my waist and chest unless I stop drinking all this alcohol.

I don't want to wake up "seedy and guilty" anymore.

    Matt.

            Serious Wake-Up Calls

            Hi Matt,
Sounds like you are listening to those wakeup calls, always a good thing! I too am in the awakening stage. Today is Day 3 on the supplements and I can tell you they work wonderfully to kill the cravings and begin repair.

I thought I would share something with you that i just learned about alcohol and fat (since I am experiencing the same fat issues!), in case you want more info to add to your arsenol...if you are like me, the more solid reasons you have for quitting, the better.

So the bottom line about fat gain and alcohol is that the body converts alcohol to a byproduct whose technical name I can't remember, acetalyn or something, and because the body first burns THAT byproduct of alcohol as its fuel, it doesn't touch the fat, so you are right on the mark about not being able to lose excess fat without giving up the hooch :-(

Anyway, welcome to this board. It is a good place for people like us to be if we want to meet supportive, interesting and helpful people

              Serious Wake-Up Calls

              Hey Matt,

I'm on Day 4! Looks like we have alot of the same wake-up calls.

              1. Worried about my liver

              2. Worried about my heart

              3. Worried about my step-son who just came to live with us growing up with a drunk in the house

              4. Worried about waking up dissappointed in myself every day.

              WE CAN DO THIS!

              YAY! for us!

                Welcome ........... (pause) Matt -

(Sorry Victoria, could resist your pun on mat). Congrats for day 5. Your system is now officially alcohol-free. Research says that after 96 hours, the alcohol should be out of your system. We're all in the same boat. I managed three days AF, but relapsed. Currently, I'm reading Allen Carr's book on how to stop alcohol. It makes for good reading.

                Anyway, welcome on board

Thanks so much for your kind words of support!

Roxy, I think the metabolite you are talking about is Acetaldehyde. And yes, that would explain why I could never shift the excess weight!
