Did you lose weight after becoming AF

Over the years of AL I gained about 60 lbs. I have been unable to lose weight successfully, due the fact that 1) I had absolutely no energy to exercise, was barely able to make it though a "normal" day until I got my false energy from alcohol at night. 2) I would seek out high fat/starchy foods to help me cope with hangovers, plus I just didn't care (or not enough to do anything about it), because alcohol was all I needed to feel good (attractive). HAH! What a liar that Bitch (alcohol) is!!!

Yes Ma'am I was around 215 when I stopped, dipped as low as 188, but seem to be hovering right around 190, and I think 190 looks better on muh 6 foot frame than the 215 did. Its pretty easy to see how......avg 10 beers a night(plus the Jack Danny shot or 3) 100 calories a beer, right around 1000 empty calories EVERY night of EVERY week!

7000 calories a week, are you kidding me.......sorta hard to slim down with that kind of intake

Gotta admit, watching the sides of my stomach literally caving in, helped me not pick up the devil juice

Thanks guys! We all know guys lose weight faster and easier than girls (women), lol. I sure hope that I am able to start losing weight as well!

The reason I asked, although it seemed pretty obvious that I would (lose weight), is that I've seen some posts where ppl were concerned that they were gaining weight after quitting. I hope like hell I don't get any bigger!!!!

LG - started losing initially - now I'm back to where I was but I've also been eating a lot more sweets than I used to and due to a shoulder (and cold weather), haven't been exercising a whole lot. I'm only talking a couple of pounds though - nothing drastic.

Hi! I am down to my preferred weight right now. I am also 5 months AF. It didn't happen overnight. When I quit last year at this time, I went over a month AF and didn't really lose....and then this time - starting in September, I didn't lose right away. I'd say it was possibly Nov or Dec before I felt that I was losing some.

All that you said is true! The lack of energy, motivation...but mostly for me...when I was drinking daily, I felt like eating junky stuff. That's what sounded good to me.

So, all in all, I think you shouldn't give up too soon....it will happen but it's going to take some time. Some do even gain some when they first quit, but I do think that - like Nelz said - logically, it HAS to happen, if we aren't consuming all those empty calories. Be good to yourself...and eat what appeals to you at first and don't worry about the weight....worry about staying sober....it's all worth it and there's nothing but good to come from it. :l

This is something that is on my mind actually - I'm 5ft 9 and weigh 9st 10lbs (136lbs) so a pretty ideal weight. I actually don't want to loose weight and look really scrawny! Although I joined the gym a few weeks ago so I guess building up a bit more muscle will help.

I started losing as soon as I quit. I lost about 15 lbs. in the first four months of quitting. I did start off my quit doing a 2 week diet that didn?t allow any alcohol so that I would have a handy excuse for not drinking. (Ridiculous to feel the need for an excuse at all.) Anyway except for the no alcohol part I didn?t follow the diet too closely. The last 6 weeks or so I?ve remained at my current weight which is about where I want to be, although another 5 lbs. would be nice! Now I eat pretty much what I want -- including things like chocolate, pastries, ice-cream and other desserts which I used to skip while drinking because I didn?t want to get any heavier. It?s been great!

Hi Lola -- I?m still just a few days ahead of you and I?m glad you?re still here! I was really sorry to hear about your mother. Hope you are doing okay.

Willow, 136 lbs at 5'9 is very slim! No, I'd think you wouldn't want to lose any more weight hun. I'd love to be 136 lbs at 5'4, lol! I would be ecstatic!

Nice to hear all of your stories, and I hope I am one of the lucky ones who do lose some of the AL lbs.

I lost weight after quitting drinking, not a ton, but it is noticeable. I gained alot more energy, and excercise is a big part of my plan. Another nice part is the effects on skin. After quitting, my face lost its "puffiness" and blotchiness after a couple of months. Then the skin tightened up, making me look a few years younger. Seeing these physical changes, even though they are positive is a little alarming! What was I doing to my body?!?

I too have gained weight over the last few years. It certainly wasn't all from food. If I truly added up al the AL calories I'd probably faint from shock! I'm hoping my exercising and staying sober will bring my old bod back. Of course the cupcakes I just made may not be helping.

Red wine has 200 per 8 ounce glass. I was drinking 4 glasses a night (at least!) so that's 800 calories...empty calories. I am at a good weight and am tall so a few pounds here or there isn't too obvious, but what I notice immediately when I stop drinking is that my face and belly become less bloated. I do loose about 5 pounds in a months time without trying. I also eat better and am in control more of what I eat when I am sober.

I agree with what Pinecone said about the positive effects on your skin. Even just a few days sober, I notice that my skin has more of a glow and I look less tired around the eyes. Last year when I made it 70 days sober, my skin looked better than ever and my eyes were clear. So, it definitely makes a difference in your physical appearance right away!

Lastly, like Pinecone, exercise is a big part of it for me. When you exercise, you feel better about yourself and it will help fill up some of the hours you once spent drinking, and turn them into a positive use of your time verses a negative one.

Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress!:l

Gaining, eating much more than when drinking. I knew this would happen and am now planning to curb the food consumption. I gave myself two weeks of not 'caring', now I care.

Good Luck. I have tips... and am putting them into play for myself. Fresh lemonade. Honey and tea, hot and gallons in the fridge. Cut veggies and fresh fruit. Healthy prepared on hand, ready snacks.

i am kind of like jaxees...i have given myself a little time to not care and just ate everything i wanted but i was also depressed as hell about the DUI...i am pretty healthy but found myself wanting things like hamburgers and swiss rolls. i ate a whole pack of girl scout cookies the other night, but luckily my weight has not gone up and i feel pretty normal now...i am about 22 days sober. this week i will go back to controlling my food intake. luckily i am tall so i can pull it off a bit.
