New to Group - Day 2

Ordered the book and the Extreme starter pack.

Didn't drink yesterday. Might tonight if I go out (Tuesday is my night out with friends).

My goal is to not drink at home. I want to limit it to 1 - 2 drinks if I go out.

I realize I might have to stop completely, especially at first, to reset and recover.

Right now I have no desire to drink.

I was having 4 - 6 drinks a day, every day. I felt like crap every morning.

The longest I've stuck with a not drinking commitment was 2 weeks.

Using the drink tracker. I think that will help. Tracking food has helped me lose weight in the past, so I am hopeful it will do the same to help me control my drinking.

So, I guess what I really wanted to say is :new:

Lkea, welcome.:welcome: I wanted to suggest that you try the Newbie's Nest under Just Starting Out. Lots of support there! And also, the Toolbox - link below:

There is also a Monthly Moderation thread - not sure how active it is, though.

      Best to you.

Thanks Nelz, Unwasted and Library Girl (great name BTW, I read A LOT).

I think this is a journey of self discovery, so I will see what happens. Right now I'm angry and the last thing I want to admit is that I have a real problem with alcohol.

I want to believe that alcohol is a symptom, not a root problem.

My dad was a raging alcoholic, abusive and mean as hell, when he wasn't his alter ego, Mr. Charming.
I went to Al-Anon and Al-A-Teen. Hated the groups. The ones I attended seemed to focus on complaining or blaming instead of taking responsibility.

I realize we respond biologically and chemically and that is my focus for now. Thinking of how alcohol effects the "machine" that is my body.

Anyhow, I'm home for the night. Checking out a lot of the boards. Drinking mineral water. . .

          Thanks for the shout outs!

            WELCOME LKEA

Welcome-and loved the alter-ego comment. Pretty funny.

Both my parents were alcoholics so I know what you mean. I still have issues with thinking of what might have been for my siblings and myself had they been decent parents. I don't allow myself to dwell on this for vry long though.

Don't worry about the label "alcoholic". I tried AA but it was not for me. It seems to me that there is a tiny bit of a gray area, but alcohol "use" is either a really bad thing for you or it is not. Of course that thought does not take into account the people on their way early on to alcohol addiction I suppose.

Stay strong and take good care of yourself.

PS--I was noticing in some reading last night that a lot of questionnaires ask the question "How often do you USE alcohol?" It just struck me as odd wording. Using, not drinking, but using as in for a specific purpose. After all people don't generally think of drinking as using, though of course alcohol is a drug. And drugs are considered USING.
I don't know why I'm getting off on this tangent. LOL

That's interesting, Ann. I have seen it worded that way also (use alcohol). I guess I really didn't give it a second thought, but now that you have, it's apt. We drink alcohol, technically, but we really use it for the effect. No other beverage could be described this way, nor could the word be substituted for Orange Juice, for example. LOL, I don't know where I'm going with this either~!:H

                Hey Library Girl -

I noticed you're one day away from your 7 day goal!?!

                Way to kick ass.

I think it's a great way to rephrase "having" with "using". Anything that makes us treat alcohol a different way will make a new neurological pathway, a new habit, for us.

I am on day 3 now. Still waiting for my book and starter pack. Kind of grumpy. Super tired. Eating like a maniac.

                  Hi Lkea,
I'm glad you're here, and congratulations on day 3! Eat and sleep as much as you need to, your body is trying to recover. The first 3 days are the hardest in my opinion (physically). After that it's all mental...which can be tough, but it's do-able! Stick close to us here, it's a HUGE help.
                  Keep up the great work!

Welcome! Love your cute kitty with beret avatar (I, like many here, are animal lovers...yet another thing we share in common...).

My mother was/is an alcoholic but won't admit it. She drinks close to a large bottle of white wine a night. We used to be drinking buddies when I lived at home. Sad. She is now in her mid-70's and despite heavy drinking for the last few decades, she is luckily in great health otherwise (knock on wood). For me, I'm done with drinking for good. I owe a big part of my success to this very site. I wish you the best in your journey and hope you will stick around. It only gets better!

Welcome I am new here too and find the people here very helpful. I am trying the holistic approach and find that it is working as long as I work it. Meaning if I take the L-Glut, kudzu and thistle I do much better. Are all of you on the RX meds? I am so afraid to order on line. Has anyone ordered online and if so how did that go?
