    Physical Changes After Going AF

I am only on day three but I am seriously hoping to stop this accelerated aging process that the years of AL abuse has caused, not just on the outside but on the inside as well!

One thing that really motivated me this time was the before and after pictures I found online of a woman who had been a heavy drinker for many years. (it was actually an app you could get on your iphone in scotland or something??) I have noticed so many little red capillaries around my nose and my face is just so bloated. I just look like crap!

My liver sometimes aches and right now I have this pain in my throat underneath my chin. There is also this little nodule or lymph node that is swollen under my chin. I am so worried that I may have throat cancer b/c of my heavy drinking. The last time I got my liver checked, it was ok. I know I need to see a doctor about my throat.

Does anyone have any motivational stories about how their health and looks improved after becoming AF??

    Physical Changes After Going AF

    Hi Hope

I can only say that I know I look much better since quitting smoking and drinking. It can be an amazing transformation.
There is just such a typical unhealthy appearance when the body is treated badly. Bloating, redness, splotchiness, grayish pallor. I would imagine that anyone who stops the bad stuff is going to see and certainly feel a tremendous difference.

    Hang in there!

      Physical Changes After Going AF

I swear my nails and hair are getting better but I would not have thought that possible (reduced alcohol since start Feb).

There a definite small changes, and my skin is looking a bit clearer

LOTS of great changes...I have to cut my nails really frequently mands...and they are really strong! My hair actually went through a bad phase a month or so ago, I think I had some new growth that was making it act strange...it is thicker...(I am 5 months AF). The skin on my face - well, I had lots and lots of broken caps all over my cheeks, and they were showing up on my nose and chin, too. They aren't gone - but are wayyyy less. I always walk around without make up now.
I don't have the liver pain anymore...I don't ever shake...my posture is better - I think because I'm not always beating myself up over drinking...and overall, I have lost 12-15 pounds...I just feel so much better about the way I'm taking care of my body now...and it definitely shows...

Lost 25 pounds, and I am in the best shape since I was 17...I'm 43. My hair and my nails are very healthy looking, my blood pressure is perfect my depression disappeared, and I look 10 years younger. One major motivator that kept me going early on was the compliments on how good I looked in as little as 6 weeks after quitting. I feel like a teenager again....nothing hurts and I am happy!!

Hope - I remember one member posting after 60 days AF that Detox is better than Botox!

I have noticed in my short time AF that my skin is healthier, my eyes are clear, and as I'm sleeping more soundly I look rested instead of walking around with bags under my eyes! I would say yes, you can count on looking better if you give up AL!

I ran a 5 mile race and averaged 7 and 1/2 minute miles. I would have never been able to do that while drinking. Body fat is gone. I've always exercised somewhat but after quitting I'm really seeing and feeling the benefits.

Best thing IMO is the 20 pounds I dropped. Not to mention the clarity of mind that comes without waking up in a fog every morning, and trying to recover from that.

Nothing good EVER happens as a result of AL

I love the motivation! I was so into working out before I started drinking heavily. Now the only time I will get on the treadmill or do yoga is if I have gone AF for at least a couple of days. I can't wait to start working out at least three days a week again. I can't wait to increase that to about five days a week. I will feel so much better! I can totally tell with the bags under my eyes after about four days AF but I always seem to drink on day three or four and the bags come back again in full swing.

Mylife...I like the "60 days AF that DEtox is better than Botox." I love botox and don't know what I'd do without it and I'm only 35. I have been getting it since I was about 30. maybe once I'm AF for a while I can lay off of it for a while

Haha, lolab! I'm the same age as you, and I never have had any botox either. I was lucky, in that I always looked so much younger than I was...the years of AL have made me look close to what I am now, but boy what I would do to take all the damaging effects of AL back! I know I would look like a different person now.

                        How much is botox, rofl!

If you want to see some inspirational pictures of physical changes after quitting alcohol, please do take a look at the My story section - Doggy Girl's before and after pictures taken over 6 months when she went sober. They can be found inher thread " my new story starts here" . I've bumped it up for you. It's a long thread but well worth a read. She posts the photos in early Jan 2009.

If this does not motivate you to stay AF , nothing will. This thread is SO inspirational.

Thanks Sausage! I'll look that up!

Lolab and Library Girl - I'm 48 and have never had botox either - I just thought it was a funny saying that someone posted. I don't think I have the type of wrinkles that would work with botox - and besides I've seen too many horror stories on the plastic surgery channels so I'd be too afraid LOL!
