Wish me luck, Lent starts Wed and I'll be AF :) (I hope)
I keep reading all the posts for reinforcement. Been taking the supps and will be listening to the CD's double time. Not that I'm that religious, but Lent is a good excuse to give it up. I'm excited and scared at the same time. I can' t remember the last time I was AF; oh yeah, hospital/breast cancer. If I can beat that, I can beat this! You'll be hearing a lot from me in the next few days/weeks...........hope I can do it :dunno:Tags: None

Sunshine,
You'll be fine. It's a bit like going on a first date... anticipation mixed with a bit of anxiety.
Just one favour though. Please don't regard it as giving up. We have to be very careful what we say and think to ourselves.
Hidden Gem is absolutely right. You become what you think about.

You will do great Sunshine! If you have a start date and your mind is made up you are already two steps ahead of the 'game'. Not that I like to call it that. Post and read as much as your heart desires. This is what I do. Lean on us for support. Ask questions.... rant .... share joyful experiences.... whatever you want!
I never even heard of Lent before this thread. How sad is that? I know all about Easter tho! My favourite holiday of the year!!
Keep us posted on how you are doing. You can do it !!!! Believe in yourself !!!!

Good on you Sunshine. I am off to early service at the local Anglican church in the morning at 7am and I'll be thanking God for finding this site and all the wonderful people who have and continue to help me every day. Good things have been happening since the 1st January when I stoped binge drinking and I feel one hell of a lot better. I know there was devine intervention to get me here.
Anyway, tomorrow is important to us as Christians and I will pray for all of you whom I have come to know and who share your journey with me and vis a versa.eace:

Thank you everyone! Although I have one close friend who truly knows how serious my drinking has become, she doesn't have my problem, so I'm not sure she will understand what I am about to go through or how important it is to me. The support here will mean more than I can say. I have been drinking every day for over 20 years.
Your right Rags, I shouldn't think about it as "giving up", like losing your best friend. I'm going to think of it as just not drinking for a while. Once I prove to myself I can do this, maybe I can enjoy a glass of wine now and then........ then again - maybe not? Time will tell, I start my journey tomorrow~ Thanks again for all the support!

Hey Sunshine,
I love the idea of "giving up" drinking for Lent. I don't think of it as religious, though, I think of it as a spiritual exercise. Religion is a man-made thing, and walking next to the power in the universe, whether you call it God or something else, is a whole other thing.
I have friends who don't "sacrifice" for Lent, but rather try to live their life in a more spiritual plane and be more thoughtful and considerate of others, behave better, etc. Well, if you strive for sobriety, you are certainly trying to accomplish living a better life for Lent.
Look at it in the best way that you possibly can to help you with success! It sounds like you are laying down the groundwork for success already.
All the best,
KathyAF as of August 5th, 2012

Good luck to you sunshine girl! I've already started lent on monday (eastern orthodox) I have decided to go AF instead of mods. I also agree that it is a good opportunity to be more spiritual. Deny yourself some worldly thngs and realize that you can do it - it makes you stronger. Other things I've done in that past years for Lent were not to shop for things that weren't a neccesity i.e. just groceries, etc. It certainly doesn't have to be religious. Let's support each other!

Gah - if I had to face Lent I would turn to the bottle. Wait... that wasn't helpful. To be serious you can do it and on any given day of the week. I wouldn't make such a big deal about the day/occasion on which you give up your addiction, as by giving it more significance than it deserves, the challenge that you're facing will seem more immense in your mind. Just be careful to not blow the 'giving it up' side of sobriety out of proportion. It is of great significance but its not a great loss. Just start from now; this moment; this second. As of now you are sober, or no longer continuing to drink, whatever the case may be. Good luck. =)
