AK,
I have only had a very positive experience with AA, myself, others horrible.
However, I was not diligent about working the steps, etc. and needed other things to prod me into quitting for good.
I plan on going to AA from time to time. I find it so helpful to be around others "like me."

I have had both good and bad experiences with AA. Do you have an all womens AA meeting near you? I did find those to be better suited for me. I personally found SMART Recovery groups to be the best fit for me. I really liked the behavior modification approach, kinda like a roadmap to making positive changes.
Just try everything you can (reading, meetings, counseling, posting here). You can do this-just throw everything you got at it.
As always, take care and let me know if you need anything!:lAL free since March 17th 2011...loving this life. No drinking no matter what.

Ak-girl,
I have been posting on the other thread about my AA experiences. I hated it my first time around because I was not ready to admit that I was powerless over alcohol. Mainly, I still wanted to drink occasionally, which of course turned into every day, horrible hang overs, unexplained sick days, embarrassing behavior--all the usual stuff.
I finally was ready. I went back to AA, got myself a sponsor, and now I have 15 days clean! I agree that you should try to find a women's meeting or at least a beginners meeting. There are many different kinds of meetings. If you don't feel like talking, try a speaker meeting. It is also critical that you introduce yourself if you are new and ASK FOR HELP. If you ask, you will very likely find yourself surrounded by caring people who want to help you get clean.
Good luck!Liath

I only went a few times but the experience was positive,I would recommend it for anyone starting out,It can be an added tool in our fight against Alcohol. As far as I know all meetings are different and it might take you a while to get the right one for oneself. Also remember you can take from it what you want and leave the rest, thats what worked for me.
