Hello maurie and welcome back! You do sound very busy! Are u still working on the 10% reduction plan. Many years ago I gave up cigs exactly the same way after many, many attempts, and am trying this method with AL. I have been able to reduce my al intake from a bottle a night or 2 of wine to maybe a bottle once or twice a week. The cravings do lesson overtime. I hope in the next few months to stop completely. It does take a lot of committment but i think is achievable Good Luck!!

I have my first counselling appointment next Monday and I have come to a big decision, I am going to ask my doctor for antabuse or similar, I have relapsed once again and I know that I CANNOT moderate and that I NEED help once and for all Not looking for sympathy, I know I don't deserve any, I should have listened to all of you instead of thinking I knew better! I am not going to go back to AA it just isn't for me but I am going to use all the resources available to me through on trak and hopefully that will help.Taking it ODAT

Mauri; I am glad to hear you have your appointment and that you have decided moderation is not for you.....I am very much in the same place so time to get it together and beat this beast once and for all.
We seem to be going along a similar path and I would love that we support each other and make it all the way.
Stay strong and do whatever it takes....IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO BE WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN

Hey Mauri and Daisy - go for it, you guys can do it....
Mauri - I am impressed that you are going for AB - I have thought about it so many times, but I am too chicken to do it. I have looked at websites, costed it out, but never got to the order stage, nevermind actually taking it. I am so scared I would take one and then decide to drink to see if all they say is really true - I am worried that I am one of those peopel who has to see to believe, and then AB scares the beejeebers out of me!“The only courage you will ever need is the courage to live the life you want"

Mauri, I'm so glad you are making forward progress. No one wants to take another medication, but in this case, maybe the med isn't as bad as the problem. K9 over in the NN has absolutely NO side effects from it. Scottish, you should talk to K9 about trying to drink over it....it sounds like she was in a Steven King movie! It takes the option OFF the table. If you have tried everything else, it's certainly worth a try...what have you got to lose? Except the horrors of AL??? If you are like me, it AINT FUN ANYMORE, it's a nightmare that I couldn't wake up from. AB is a tool in the arsenal, and that's what it's there for. THIS is just what is was intended to do...so go for it and see how wonderful life can be when you aren't under a CLOUD all the time!! Good job, all for taking the reins!! Byrdie

Byrdie is right...when I tried to drink on AB, it was like a Stephen King movie...only my head wasn't spinning ALL the way around...only about half way! Believe me, you do NOT want to try to drink on it "just to see". I can save you same pain if you just trust what I say. I wanted to crawl OUT of my skin (and that was the "slight" reaction). The "bad" reaction was vomiting all night long and feeling like there was a knife in the bottom of the back of my head. The thing about AB is that you can't even get drunk on it...so you get to go through all of this without even getting a buzz. So if you enjoy having flushed skin, blood red eyes, a palpitating heart and labored breathing, then by all means...have an AB and a cocktail! Now you know I am just kidding, I would NEVER suggest mixing the two...ever. Despite all the "horrors", I do NOT have any reactions to AB other than alcohol. It's like I don't even take it...other than the fact that I KNOW it's there, and what it WILL do if I decide to drink. Believe me, it's enough to make me run screaming for the hills when I think of the reaction! Despite all of this, I am the biggest fan of Antabuse...it has literally saved my life.
K9:heart:I love my daughter more than alcohol:heart:
Believe in yourself. You are stronger than you think.

Hi all,
I haven't been doing well at all and I go on hols on Saturday so I am just into damage limitation at the moment - had 3 wines this evening and just made a cup of tea and off to bed, I am being realistic and knowing I am not going to do my holiday sober but i have major plans for when I get back - the Monday after I return on the Saturday I have my first counselling appointment ( the one I thought I had was actually just to see my key worker) and then two days later I have my key worker appt and then the following Thursday I start group sessions, also I got onto the teaching course so hopefully that will give me an alternative focus.
So that is where I am at at the moment, onwards and upwards from now hopefullyTaking it ODAT

Mauri - so good to see you - I almost posted to you the other day, but for some reason didn't do it, but you have been in my thoughts.
I am also continuing to struggle - and enjoying a new thread called tail between legs - get a lot of support there.
I also got a reply the other day that would seem appropriate to you "Lassie, i hope you aren't putting too much pressure on yourself to keep up with people on their AF time. You don't let anyone else down at all as far as i'm concerned. We are all often at different stages of our journey, and sometimes we just aren't ready to stop and stay stopped yet. When this is the case, we need to stay as safe as possible, and be careful we don't put ourselves in danger whilst drinking till we work ourselves out. The safest way to drink is not to, but if we are drinking, my wish is that folks can use harm reduction techniques and just try not to go too hard. Wishful thinking i suppose for any of us. " It seems that you know what you can and can't manage just now, but harm reduction sounds like a good plan.
Enjoy your holiday and come back refreshed and ready for all your plans...
really good to hear from you :l:l:l“The only courage you will ever need is the courage to live the life you want"
