    Just did a quick calculation

And based on the average dollar amount the hubs and I would spend on alcohol per month, including those times we'd drink while eating out, over the past 10 years we have spent over $60,000 just on booze alone. That's not including the cost of some of the stupid decisions we've made both as a direct and as an indirect result of drinking. Ugh. I could do a lot with $60,000. :upset:

I've been putting $100 a week in a designated account for every week I stay AF. I do it each Sunday night and it's also a nice ritual of acknowledging a successful AF week. I want to let that money pile up and spend it on something that affects my life for the better, not worse. Maybe you could do the same and in six months be booking an exotic vacation

The first pay cheque I got after I'd given up drinking there was so much money still in my account I went to the bank and asked if I had forgotten to pay my mortgage. Usually they would be onto me like a fat kid on a smarty!!!

Gosh....I don't even want to add the dollars up. I saw some one add up the time involved.....time engaged in drinking.....time recovering from the hangover....and compared it to the amount of time she actually enjoyed the drinking. In a typical 24 hour period....3 hours of enjoyment.....21 to recover. When added up....the years of recovering from a hangover seemed so sickening......Now I spent $60,0000 (I'll take your number). to have a hangover most of my life!

For myself though....I think I will add these numbers up to the best of my ability....need that shock wave!

It looks less enough, what was your AL buying patterns ?? . did you buy from store and drank at home or pop into a pub ?.If you go to the pub its really low amount, your calculation might be inaccurate ?? . Isn't it ?

In my early years I bought at the bar, then when my children started coming along I would purchase at the liquor store. I'm probably being conservative with my calculations. It could quite possibly be much, much more. Either way, it's sickening. But I'm not going to be beat myself up over it, I'm just going to do everything I can to recover from it.

                          Just did a quick calculation

I reckon my $100 a week is probably a conservative estimate given where I live you can blow $100 in a night out drinking. Not to mention I find there's a lot of flow-on expenses like taxis, food eaten late at night, more likely to go out for brunch the next day for a greasy breakfast to soak up the alcohol etc. Not to mention lost work time and productivity.

Dix, that's a lovely thought saving it for your kids instead. I don't know if I'd minus the healthy living costs as those are great beneficial expenses

The amount I save now I've quit smoking, am not drinking and have even, of late, stopped getting a coffee each morning (drinking tea at home instead) is quite remarkable.

I also realized that in addition to the cost of alcohol and the extras you spend money on when you go out is all of the cost associated with property lost or damaged. I have lost a wad of cash. $4,000 to be exact that I was supposed to deposit but got too drunk to put it away and had a cleaning service steal it. Lost jewelry, pocket books, wallets, keys, prescription glasses, iPhone, iPod, etc. Damaged my car, upholstery, walls, computer etc. The list goes on and on when comes to the financial cost of drinking. Yuck!!!!!
