My clothes remind me of alcohol and cigarettes

I think I am ready to leave all of the bad memories and mistakes behind. In order to do this I need to get rid of everything that reminds me of alcohol fuelled binges, the blackouts, the stupid things I did. There is no way to go back and change them; however, there is a way to remember them less often.

Recently I have been noticing how my old clothes remind me of the nights out that I really want to forget. For example a few days ago I put on a sweater that I haven’t worn in a month and it had traces of tobacco smell. I immediately threw it in the wash. Later thinking about that I decided to buy a completely new wardrobe with the money I save not drinking or smoking. So the biggest offenders will go first and then gradually I plan to replace the rest.

Has anyone gone to such extremes?

YES! Same thing for me, I got rid of my "evening wear"....what I wore at night at home while I was drinking and smoking (I have a story about my yoga pants that have a hole in the arse cheek...I wore them to the liquor store MANY times). Also, I had certain "hangover clothes" that I got rid of too...

Do WHATEVER it takes to distance yourself from it. Remember, I'm the one that rearranged my furniture so my drinking spot was different, that was all I could do since I ONLY drank at home.

You're doing great...I like the way you are willing to make changes, I really think you are going to succeed at this!

      You are Super Smart Allan!

I had this little purple dress I looked great in from back in the day....it was also the dress I got a DUI in After a Christmas party. I hung on to that stupid dress thinking I'd wear it but never ever did...just kept looking at it hanging there. Couldn't really figure out why I couldn't chuck it.

It was t until years later, never worn, that I got serious about AL and the light bulb went off.

It went right in the trash no problemo ....

Thanks K9. I was more of a bar drinker, however, when my friends went home I would stay on and just drink on with strangers or at the very least stock up on alcohol on my way home. Just never wanted the night to end, probably anticipating the morning to come...Sometimes it ended up badly. Like I would wake up in the morning, check my pockets and would have receipts from places I didn’t even recognise or ever been to. What did I do there until 3am? The last thing I remember was getting a cab at around 11pm. Scary feeling not to remember.

Kradle I have been in your shoes, never got caught DUI, however, I did smash my rentals bumper while on holiday against another car. I quickly switched seats with the passenger, who was also pretty drunk but less so than me. I couldn’t even look up when I stepped out of the car, as I had head spins. Lucky for me the other driver was in the wrong and I suspect that he was drinking too, so we decided not to get police involved. I got home, threw up and took a cold bath. How could I ever put myself behind a wheel when I was on the verge of passing out? Just the thought of driving in a state that you can’t even follow the road due to head spinning damn, how am I still alive? After that I got smart and never ever drove drunk again, had a key system that required me breathing into it, as described in one of my previous threads. Just think of how many decent people like us made the same mistake but ended up hurting or even worse killing their passengers or pedestrians. SCARY!!!

Thats exactly the kind of memories I want to erase or at the very least lock up deep in a dusty room at the back of my mind.

I had a favorite glass I used for years. On my last and final quit, I threw it in the trash. Good riddance! I had a nice pair of slacks I wore to a Christmas party, as I was leaving I fell and tore the knee...I tried to patch it with an iron on. Everytime I looked at them, it made my sick...I put those in the Goodwill. I have enough bad memories without the real stuff hanging there reminding me! B

I have always done the rapid response - as soon as I come across 'evidence' of my previous nights antics, cigarette burns in pyjamas, wine stains, wet mucky slippers, I would hide it in plastic bags so that it wasn't obvious what it was and hide it deep under the other rubbish in the outdoor bin......ooooh, the shame.
