      K9:
I think it takes a whole lot of courage to go on Antabuse! Good for you!

      Wildflowers:
Thank you for your encouragement. Day 2 is going well. I don't have much cravings at all. I think I'm addicted to this MWO forum instead of alcohol now!!!!

Stick with that last statement and stay addicted to the site.

Even when things get shitty ( and I include on the site as well :H) spending time exchanging with others in the same boat is priceless.

It stops that 'no one knows how I feel' self pitying voice. Also you can really learn that, whilst you may share an addiction, you are still TOTALLY unique. This applies equally to here as in the real world.

MWO has helped my sobriety AND self esteem in ways I could barely have imagined.

          Kuya:

Well said! Plus alcohol costs a lot more than WMO! I'll be saving thousands in alcohol costs and medical bills! Yesterday I splurged and bought a $3500 message chair to celebrate my day 2 sobriety....ummmm..... I figure I need something else to relax me than alcohol, right?! (As an alcoholic, I'm great at justification)

            Completely disagree AllenKay,

Respectfully. My concern with your approach is that people will walk away and say "I tried xyz and it didn't work" so I guess I'm hooked for good. Often people need a "bridge" from one substance to another and that will allow them to realize a short term success. That builds confidence. Yes! I can do this. And then they move on to the next step. An all or nothing methodology breeds failure. Whats more, those who can’t manage a “cold turkey” approach will give up for good and they should not. There is a huge risk of many families and lives that could be helped by medical intervention. There should be no judgement, whatever path one takes to get away/minimize alcohol consumption is an individual choice

Stumpy, insomnia is a protracted symptom of AL withdrawal. It can last up to a year. I know this personally. It also influences the recidivism rate or to be plain, the rate of falling off the wagon. Some people find magnesium supplements will help. Epsom salts baths especially to the feet are good, because Mg is absorbed readily across the skin of the foot. I really feel for you, I have had my share of no sleep, Tryptophane also can be in short supply, and you get that from turkey, peanut butter and warm milk.

Allan I respect anyone who tries cold turkey methods for their determination but a lot of people just simply have a huge biochemical hurdle to get over during the first year. The biochemistry of recovery from alcohism is hugely complex and persistent. If you havent abused al for very long, have a very resilient healthy body, are young, have no psyc issues, have a lot of support at home, its a LOT easier. I would never suggest anyone who needs medical help with cravings is doing themselves harm, esp in comparison to their past condition.

Mind you, if you have done it without any help, fair play to you.

Yes, during the first year for some it can play a huge role in the biochemical healing process. My PDr., OP-Rehab, Private Counselor, PHD all diagnosed me with PTSD & GAD. Possibly a wee bit of sub type ADD. I suspect many of us have this if we stay married long enough, survive the teenage years, aging parents, life, along with any other bureaucratic BS we must survive to maintain a roof over are heads & food in our stomach's. I also dropped out of college at one point in my life as well.

I was able to maintain 3.5 month stretches of agonizing sobriety at periodic intervals during the last several yrs.

Topamax is RXd off label longer for PTSD & as an AD when front line AD's don't work. Lucky me it also seems to help with reduction of some cravings as well. But, then again I also have Graves disease which can sometimes produce bi-polar symptoms at times. Every now & then I have hypo-mania which I enjoy. Which means I must be careful with the Topa to. I plan to keep my thyroid as I've done my research. Along with PAWS, menopause. I'm not planning on giving up chocolate anytime soon. :H

:goodjob: To all of us however we find our path to freedom, wholeness, happiness, & health. I'd like to add that RJ used Topa to modd, but then found out like many do, it doesn't work & she became abstinent.

If a thyroid gland, being such a small gland, when dysfunctional can cause metabolic, emotional, and temperature regulation problems, and people have take thyroid hormones to regulate it, then why can't a big complex organ such as the brain, which controls your movements, emotions, your involuntary movements like breathing and b?lance, sometimes needs help w meds to help regulate the neurotransmitters and synapses to work better?
