hi, I'm new to this sort of thing, but bin reading other people's msgs and seems really friendly and non judgemental so here goes :-) I'm Dave I'm 39 yo bin drinking since I was 18. suffer from depression most my adult life. smoked alot of dope in my younger days which I gave up at 25 then started drinking heavly. I don't know if I'm an alcoholic but I certainly rely on a drink to help me unwind or forget my working day. I normally probably average around 4 beers a night more at wkend and snooker nights ( which is tonight) had a big bender last Saturday and felt like crap all Sunday until I got my hair of the dog. I've been dry since then, felt proud of myself even if only 3 days. but I'm out tonight and tempted to have a couple , then I got my Fri and sat treats and Sunday drink to forget it's Monday the next day. I'm joking thats normally how I justify it to myself. might stay in tonight to help. sorry for the rambling as I said I'm new to this. thanks DaveAF since 12/11/12Tags: None

Welcome Dave, I've been told that Melatonin works really well but it made me sick, most meds and vitamins are hard on my stomach but many people swear by it. I had to go through my doctor for a sleep aide, I can't say that my sleeping problems are from quiting AL over a month ago.AF since 8/29/12 Goal 30 day-screwed up on day 9

Hi Dave and Welcome!
You've been given good advice already, I have to agree with the Epsom Salt bath, it replenishes minerals that alcohol has robbed your body of. It will also calm and relax your body, making it easier to sleep. I also use Melatonin as a sleep aid when needed. As far as thirst quenchers, I would recommend Gatorade or other sports drink to really rehydrate yourself. A lot of people suggest fruit juices mixed with lemon/lime soda as sort of a spritzer...personally I am hooked on iced tea right now
Stick close to us. We DO understand what you're going through, and can help. Glad to have you here!

Hi Dave, I understand you completely and what I would not give to be able to say I am 3 days. I went for a while and slipped and am in this slump. It's not easy and it sucks and all we can do it go on and hope that one day it will "click" for us. I had that click and I let it go. Alcohol is a demon and one I can't seem to shake, but I try. I actually took benydryl to help me sleep because I was afraid of other meds...but I don't know if that was the answer. Melantonin made me sick as well, but funny how the booze does not. We are here for you as we are for each other. Please keep posting and reading, that helps alot. :h

5 HTP is another supplement I swear by to calm you and help you sleep!

Dave:
To sleep: when I was in college and grad school, I dimmed the lights and read the boring text books and fell asleep in minutes.
Now: I use my Iphone and read a very boring article. The phone dims and turns itself off after some inactivity.
Otherwise melatonin or benadryl work great.
