Hi Scots lady and welcome! I've never taken Topamax, but if you click on 'Our Community', at the top, you will find a thread about meds, like topamax, baclofen, etc. If you click on this, the top entry: "New here and starting Topa with a question...", you will find pages of information and feedback on Topamax, dating all the way back to 2010 I know there is a health store on this site, but I'm not sure if you can get Topa online here or not. I'm sure you will be able to find out everything you want to know on this thread. Good luck and so glad you are here!

          Hi ScotsLady!

Just wanted to welcome you to the boards. Take a look around and post wherever you feel comfortable. There are many kind people here who can help with whatever you need. A good place to start is the Newbies Nest. I look forward to hearing more from you!

            just gettin used to this!

            Hi Scots lady,

Once I get past the withdrawals, I feel pretty good. I'm not aware of any physical cravings. It seems more mental. The truth is, I really don't know why I drink. The desire for a drink just hits me, even when I feel great. Even when nothing bad is happening.

One thing I did notice that is a huge trigger for me is watching movies or shows where everybody is drinking wine. Movies like Sideways, Frasier, cooking shows, wine commercials.....it's everywhere, or maybe, being an alcoholic, it's all I notice. That really triggers such a longing, it's actually physical. Then the obsession starts again.

And when the desire is upon me for a drink, it is an all day battle, knowing I shouldn't, fighting the urge all day long and then, finally, going out before the liquor store closes, most of the time. I have resisted many times, but have failed more times. This hold on me is such a mystery.

It's funny, I got really sick on a particular candy one Halloween, (the little individual caramels with the white swirls in it) when I was around seven years old. I can't even look at that candy today without shuddering. But that never happens with alcohol. No matter how sick it has made me. Oh, to be free and not endlessly struggling!

            .

                    Hi Pauly,

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry with your story. It's never funny at the time, but things like using yellow food coloring and water to disguise, until able to replace, the half-empty bottle of chardonnay that would be noticed in the morning. Or fishing under the seat of a boiling hot car for the emergency vodka, disguised in an individual water 'fitness' bottle. Almost too hot to handle, but not too hot to drink. And who knows what plastic chemicals were cooked into it? Oh, what insanity!

                        Hi K9 Lover,

Thanks for the link to the 'you know you are an alcoholic when....'thread. I remember at an AA meeting, or maybe it was in the Big Book, talking about how mystified non-alcoholics are to see sober alcoholics laughing about these kinds of crazy things such as found on that thread. Sprinting in a sari, at a party, to the nearest liquor store, pretending to go out for a smoke.......seeing what your perfume tastes like........

It's never funny at the time, but the utter absurdity of some of the things we have done is unbelievable to any but another alcoholic. (Of course, I don't mean the tragic events, of which there are many). But once sober, who could not see the utter insanity of these things. Normal drinkers don't do this kind of stuff. And how many of these things we have all done, regardless of where in the world we live. Anyway, thanks.
