Due to go clubbing on Friday...

    Hi all

I'm due to go to a club night on Friday in Glasgow. It's been planned for a long time and even though I am just 11 days AF at the moment, I'd still like to go as I've been looking forward to seeing some of the DJs that are playing for months.

I know that it might not seem the brightest of ideas since I've just started my journey so to speak, but I'm thinking that I'll be ok and I won't be tempted to go "f*ck it" and drink. Not everyone in the group of folk that I'll be joining drinks heavily and there is another girl who doesn't drink at all. Over and above this, I'm feeling quite confident that I'll be able to go and enjoy the night, music and atmosphere without a drink anyway. Seems odd to be saying that when I've never went out and abstained in my life.

    Am I just being naive?

Was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or tips?

    Thanks.

    Ok, since you ASKED....
Unless you are absolutely rock solid in your commitment, I wouldn't chance it. You may be able to put some fail-safes in there, like driving or something, but I think the temptation/time of year/atmosphere is putting you in a spot that is just too overwhelming...those bands will be there to play another day. I wouldn't risk it, but that's just me! I won't wish you good luck, because it isn't luck that keeps us sober. Lead yourself not into temptation! It's hard enough just to get thru the early days...we are not Mother Theresa! You will do the right thing, I'm sure...listen to your gut. B

      Hi Jingle-

Wow! I would have to agree with Byrdie! Eleven days is a great accomplishment, but I do not believe I would chance being able to stay away from the temptation, if it were me. It seems as though I remember a couple other newbies, just recently, who took chances like that before they were really ready and blew their quit. Heck, I even get tempted sometimes just reading about others drinking sometimes (and I mean when I read about it on this website!)

I know this is not what you want to hear, but that's my 2 cents!

        Jingle:

I don't know your history w alcohol and what you are doing to abstain. I don't know YOU as a person. But I would agree in general that clubbing is extremely tempting place for people to drink. I know I would have drinks there!

So, just plan well ahead if you are going anyways. And plan for the day after if you happened to drink that night.

I have to agree with the others. I've read far too many posts about "well... I'll just have one and then start again tomorrow" that end in disaster. The only thing I can suggest is to get yourself some Antabuse and start taking it NOW. It makes you horribly horribly ill if you drink any alcohol. There are a few if us here that take it. I have for three months and I have never tried to cheat on it. Its too risky. My therapist said to stay out if ANY situation that would involve alcohol for several months until new habits and a firm resolve are in place. Be wise. We care about you.

IMHO, if you have to ask, if you are honest you probably know your mind is wondering if it will be ok to just enjoy it. I tried to go into a bar around eleven days and had to leave within an hour. People I knew were drinking and offering to buy me a drink. It was just too much for me. My brain was already trying to get the best of me just stopping in without giving it any extra ammo of watching others drink and offering it to me.

You are the only one that has control over what you want and what you will do. If anything crazy is going on in your life right now, it just might be enough to push you over to join the crowd. Most of us fail that early on. Bites!

              Hey Jingle,

We're all different. Ehm... well, i was three weeks into my first quit and went to a couple of gigs - related to work, but I was off duty so could drink if I wanted to. I managed these gigs. Peeps here helped a lot. Very supportive. But I was 21 days in and on a roll. HOWEVER i did avoidgoing to a gig earleir in my quit with a good friends because simply because i reckoned it would be toohard to NOT drink.

But the fall can be hard if you do slip. I did, after 7 weeks. And again. And again. I need to ressurect the "Stella (Chook) I stole your booze" thread ... I thought i got it - but then i let AL back in. One little sip on one little inauspicious day... and by the end of the week I was back to where I was 7 weeks previously.

Be careful i think is what we are all saying - whether you go or not - be careful. It's a wiley wee bastard this AL is.

Nice to have a weegie here by the way Lived there for many a year. Southside.

              Take care :l

Also, kudzu ( available at vitamin shoppe) reduces my drinking significantly so start taking that now if you are going to go. It's like sex: better have protection than be sorry.

Thanks for your feedback guys, appreciated.

I'll really need to think about this over the next couple of days before making a final decision.

Deep down I know it's probably a bad idea and I expected the general consensus to be that it's a bit early in the proceedings to be considering an outing to a club/pub.

Maybe it's just because I am feeling so good and confident today that I'm thinking I'd manage it without a problem. Or, maybe I'm just kidding myself on. Tbh one day I'm feeling great, the next not so great - peaks and troughs at the moment it would seem.

I'm going to be in Holland & Barrett tomorrow so I'll pick up some Kudzu, just searched on their site and see that they do it - thanks for that tip!

                  Thanks again x

Pick up some micronized l- glutamine from gnc too! It helps reduce my cravings. If you decide to go, take glutamine before you go, then take kudzu with your drinks. When I did that, I could drink no more than 2 glasses of wine, then I felt I could not drink anymore.

You might be fine...but then again, you might not. Even a FULL YEAR into this, I'd be seriously considering it. I've pushed myself a little lately with Thanksgiving and then again for a dinner guest - I bought wine and served it - and I didn't have any...BUT it was H A R D. Yo have to be so prepared to deal with how strong that voice can be - the one telling you that it's ok to have just a little. Part of my plan has been to keep myself out of situations that seem too tempting, and maybe someday I'll not even be aware of that stupid voice - but today, I still am....I still hear him - and I have dealt with him enough times to know how sneaky he is - so I've been able to tell him to F off....I'm not sure I could have at just a couple weeks into my quit.

                          RC, you okay, hon???

                              Hi JJ,

I think you are in danger of losing your quit. So glad you are doing well & feeling good right now but............
I stayed home for a solid three months before I put myself in a potentially dangerous situation. I absolutely need that time to grow stronger in my quit

Your choice of course. Good luck!
