I wish someone would do something about my drinking!
What are some good techniques/resources for people who know they have a problem and are not yet ready to do something about it? And by 'people' I mean me - the person who once again was horrified to 'discover' I had been on the computer last night, who has to keep buying larger clothes because she has 'a beer gut- but from wine,' who can't get individual health insurance because of her drinking, who suspects her friend doesn't take rides from her anymore because of the frequent drunk driving, who suspects her position was among those cut at her last job because the boss could tell she had a drinking problem...hmm, maybe making a list?

There's your "key" right there. When you are ready, there is a wealth of info/techniques/ideas on here on ways to get AF(alcohol free), and then you will stand a better chance of success.
All of the symptoms you have described were felt by me, and Im sure several others here on the board. I had many "run to the computer" mornings, swearing that it would not ever happen again.....rrrrrrrrrrrrrrright.
We all know we are doing wrong, but somehow always seem to justify the drinking or just do it anyway.
IMO nothing good ever happened because of AL, and probably never will.....:H
Read posts here, ask question here.....take up a new hobby, do whatever it takes to distract yourself from the thoughts of AL. In time it will get easier, its a battle but its more than worth itLiving on Planet Sober since 05/02/11

It sounds like a cliche but you really have to want to do it before you're successful. It's not easy to do but once you're a few weeks in you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. But again, have to want to in the first place. I thought I had wanted to before. I wasn't committed to it. I'd go a few days and then open the wine again. This time I knew it was detremental for me to slip back into old habits so I'm happily off the drink over a month now and wish I had done it years ago.
Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

I was finally able to quit when it became harder to drink than to not drink. What I mean by that is I no longer have to stress out over whether I have enough booze to get me through the night, I no longer have to wake up in a panic wondering what I did the night before, I no longer have to spend half the next day doing "damage control" over stupid actions or comments, I no longer have to worry about driving drunk or seeing disappointment in my daughters eyes. That was A LOT of work. When you're sick of letting alcohol rob you of life, you will quit too. Sounds like you're a lot more ready than you think you are. We can help you...we've been there. The first step is to get a few sober days in, let your mind clear, then figure out a long term plan. Stick close and let us know how you are!

Believe in yourself. You are stronger than you think.
