Day One and onward: The Diary of a chronic Aussie Drinker

Hi Martye well done for taking your first step and avoiding the pub ;0) I'm on day 8 and feeling good. I only ever have short binges now with long periods of abstinence, but back in 2005 I was in a terrible state, 3 bottles of wine a day, one step from rehab! Anyway I went cold turkey and was in a terrible state for 3 days, vomiting, shaking, sweating, shaky hands, lack of sleep etc etc. but within 2 weeks I felt amazing, I would suggest, when feeling stronger, that you take up exercise, but in the first few days try and go for walks, eat well, drink loads of fluids, water, tea, juice. And keep close to this site.
    Wishing you well xx

Now the start of day 4. 11:47AM in Sydney Australia and doing well. I will update this evening on my day 4 adventures, thanks for asking it means a lot.
If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic.

          Day 4:

Evening gang, it is my day 4 AF, this is the longest I have gone without a drink in some time.

Cravings were ok today just my mind having fun with me. Making me think maybe I can drink a few times a year and be ok, maybe I can have 2 or 3 and still be ok, I basically told me thoughts to go and get f*****ked!

I received a buck?s night invite today the lads are going camping. It stated "Fishing/Drinking/Water Skiing/ Drinking / Fishing / drinking / drinking / drink". It is not for 2 months so hopefully my head is on tighter by then. I don?t think I would be able to resist booze on that trip so I may decline to go. That is a shame buy I must remain strong!!

I have my first meeting with ?smart recovery? tomorrow and I am looking forward to it.

If anyone has FB and wants to add me it would be good to have some positive things in my news feed and just not pictures of beer

          http://www.facebook.com/martin.evans.106

I truly hope everyone else is doing ok and are inspired to keep going!

We can all do this together!

            Hi mate,

Another Aussie here. Well done on your efforts so far! But can I make a suggestion? You don't mention "the shakes" in your latest post, so hopefully they've subsided by now. But if not, just go to a GP and ask for some valium. If you don't want to go to your regular GP, just go to another one, explain what's going on, and that you're going to a recovery meeting. They have a duty of care, and the fact that you're seeking post-withdrawal counselling on your own should be all they need to know. And believe me! - valium helps that physical withdrawal a LOT!

            Best of luck!

Joe thanks for your thoughts, I do have a great doc who looks after my depression and bi polar side. She has given me valium and Naltrexone to help me through the rough stages Where in the great land of oz do you live?

                  Day 5:
Evening gang! How is everyone? Well it is day 5 for me and I am still sober. Longest time sober in a long time! My mind keeps playing tricks on me and it pisses me off but other than that I am doing well.

I had my first “smart recovery” meeting tonight; it was good to have other people around me that were in similar situations. Very encouraging night!

I am starting to feel a little better in the head and I think each day will get a little better, I am still worried about not having “fun” without booze although that is something I will work through.

I truly hope everyone else is doing ok and I am always around for a chat if anyone needs one.

I hope everyone is kicking their addictions butts this week and will continue to do so, bright days ahead for everyone!

                    Hello, Martye.

I, too, have always had the fear of what life will be when I am sober 100%.

I have decided to just take it the proverbial "one day at a time" and let's see how things unfold.

Who knows? We may find it is more fun than ever before. :-)

                        Day 6:
Evening gang. Day 6 and still no booze. Today was rough. My Mrs is away it is hot and the cricket was on, they would all be excuses for me to drink although I stayed strong.

Only a short check in today as I am about to put a movie on.

I truly hope everyone else is kicking butt and smashing their goals!
                        Cheers

                              Day 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gday team, day 7 booze free for me! Today I had feelings of hope and joy! I just wanted to sit around the house and mope but some mates came over and dragged me to the beach. Had a good swim they had a few beers after although I had no problems with my water and coffee.

I am meeting up with someone tomorrow for a coffee that I met in my “smart recovery” meeting so that will be good.

I know it is only very early days but maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe I can do this. I think I am on a bit of a high as it is day 7 and I am feeling good.

I just need to force myself to get out of the house and do something instead of sitting on the couch all day watching movies. I would suggest to anyone near a beach to get in the water it clears the mind and the soul.

Tomorrow plan is to go for a jog in the morning, join my new friend for coffee and spend some quality time with the family.

I know all days won’t be this good so I am just enjoying it why I can!

Once again I am hoping everyone is kicking some of their goals and smashing their AF targets.

                              Good luck to you all.

Cool banana's on day 7! I'm near the beach too in sunny Melbourne and love jogging and swimming there. Keep it going mate.

                                Best wishes, G bloke.
