What did people say when you said I quit drinking

I am getting a lot of confused replies.

Like WTF are you doing that for?

My close friends and familys understand it is just the responces from people @ weddings etc that are confused.

I would love your feedback team!
If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic.

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

Call me blase, but i couldn't care less what people say if / when i tell them i quit drinking (!). If they dare challenge it, i will curl my lip into a slight snarl, look them up and down, completely disregard what they'd said, and then continue on with the conversation without missing a beat!

I guess if they challenge you, pause for a moment, look them directly in the eye and say "well, there's the reason right there", and let them work it out for themselves!

In all seriousness, i don't think you should have to justify it. I normally just don't drink and then if it gets to being offered one, you could then say, "no thank you, not tonight". You really don't have to tell anyone anything, unless you want to.

If you really have to get into reasons, you could pat your belly and just shake your head slightly, as if to say, "it's fattening"... There are always humerous ways and innuendos you can use to deflect people. The main aim is not to drink, so do what ever you have to do to stop it. Another reason is being the 'designated driver'. I'm kind of dreading a telling a heavy drinker friend of mine, but we hardly see each other, so it shouldnt' be too hard. I think the next meeting will be a day time one, so not much temptation there.

Of course, the best solution is prevention.
One day at a time.. Sometimes it's one minute or one second at a time.. Most important thing is to look ahead and don't look back!

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

I actually have received some pretty funny replies especially over xmas.

'I'm sure it will do you no harm for a few days'
'Me too, I only have one or two beers now'
      'You're not pregnant are you?'
      'At night-time too?'
'Jesus, what are you going to do in your spare time?'

None of these were directed as insults either. It's just the general attitude where I live!

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

Is been 5 days and lastnight I was asked for the first time if I drink. I had been worried about how I would hadle it from before I stopped, but when it happened, I just told the truth and said exactly what I tell myself about it.

I wrote the whole story in the last post on my thread " I decided". But basically, its a poison and I don't see the point or benifit, I sue to and I don't want too anymore! Molly is right, my mom was pround, but this outsider who "only plays brinking games with his friends etc seemed to be trying to reason with me in order to justify hiS own drinking problem. In the end he had to agree, made a little joke to console himself and I went home even more proud and sure that I done the right thing.

Wear it as a badge of honor. Proof of your self control and respect for your body! Not to knock or judge those who drink T even moderatly) but why on earth whould anyone put one or 2 glasses of poison into their bodies? What's the point exactly?

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

          Hi Martye

I was surprised at the reactions from people I know when I put a wee post up on facebook just after I had stopped - I didn't make an announcement about giving up for good or having a problem, but I said I was 'considering' giving up booze for 6 months whilst I trained for a marathon to kinda test the water.

Over and above the expected innocent teasing, I had people saying things like:

"I really don't understand why you would want to do that?"
"I don't think that's needed, moderation is the key"
"It is much harder to moderate than to give up completely - moderating demands more respect" - found that one particularly amusing.
"It won't make much of a difference to your training"
and loads more negative, discouraging, comments...

And, true enough, when I thought about the people who had made the comments, each and every one 'likes' a good drinks themselves!

I have never made the sweeping statement. I take it as it comes, but what I normally say in public is that it doesn't agree with my delicate constitution and I hold my hand on my tummy as if I have an ulcer or something....I also have ulcerative colitis and if they press, I say, 'it isn't YOUR colon'. That shuts them right up. You will find the response that's right for you....Byrdie

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

I normally just say "alcohol doesn't agree with me anymore" or "ok, I'll tell you...I'm pregnant with Brad Pitt's triplets". I've actually never had anybody push the issue. I don't butt into their business and I don't appreciate anyone butting into mine!

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

Most of my friends looked at me like I had two heads and did try to talk me out of it, their reason was simple, it made them uncomfortable, I've been in the same boat when I was drinking and someone in the group wasn't drinking,I was always trying to get them to drink, made me feel better.
Now is a good time of year to stop simply say its for a health kick, here (Ireland)a lot of people go"off" the drink until st paddys day and it's not really questioned.
After a while sober you won't care what others think ,you really will feel so good you can face anything with out fear.

I plan on telling everyone the health excuse, but anyone who knows me well, won't be surprised, they will have seen me in action, and know it was necessary.

What did people say when you said I quit drinking

I did most of my drinking secretly or at home so most of my socializing with friends was sans alcohol. I maybe had a beer or was content with a soft drink and was the dd. I have also had stretches of sobriety and I am a health freak and knowledgeable about the effects of alcohol and different substances on the body so I am frequently spouting off about that to friends and coworkers so i don't think they will find it too surprising if/when I am actually out in a drinking situation. I do have one friend who will be bummed for her 21st birthday. I think the people who will notice most will be the cashiers at the stores. They always have worried about me in the past when I didn't stick to my routine. I would stop by and let them know that I'm doing fine but I'd don't want to go there. I've used the hypnotherapy to kinda obscure those locations from my conscious. In short: I go with the "I'm a health-nut hippie training-to-be a substance abuse counselor and I don't have all my stomach or bowel so I don't care for alcohol and someday I want to have a child so no thank you very much" response.

And I have found the people who react the most (aggressively, negatively, strongly) are those who have problems themselves. By taking action on your own issues it forces others to look at what might be problems in their lives.

Once you have alcohol free time, you won't feel the need to defend yourself.

However, in the meantime, you have received excellent suggestions - I'm on antibiotics is another one.
