    Health questions for the ladies

    Hi All-

have a question about health related to alcohol and stress. I've been drinking pretty heavily (bottle or two a night) for about 13 years. This has no doubt caused many of my current health issues, weight gain, lower back pain, acid stomach etc...all of which I expected and seemed fairly common for that lifestyle.

My question is that recently I've started loosing small clumps of hair and I'm still in my early 30's (and female). mg I am scared to death and already saw my doctor who ran blood tests on the liver (it's ok) and couldn't find anything to explain.

Is this a common or even frequent side effect of drinking and smoking too much while leading a stressful life or the sign of something else? has anyone heard or experienced this? any suggestions for herbal supplements or ANYTHING really? maybe acupuncture?

Either way, I'm taking the step on the path to recovery. But not knowing where this is coming from is killing me as I feel I have no control over it.

    thanks and any advice appreciated!

Hey Truth, I do not have the answer to your q, but sometimes low iron levels can cause this, as well as stress, or hormonal changes.... gosh, the list goes on! Maybe chat to your local health shop? Hope you feel ok.

Yeah Truthy...I don't know anything really, but I do know that persistent boozing stops your body being able to absorb many vitamins and minerals, which may account for the hairloss over a long period of time.
Before I went AF...I had recurrent, and vile deep leg ulcers around my ankles and up the bottom of my calf muscles which never went away, no matter how much I tried to treat them...within three months of kicking the bottle up the arse, there is no longer even one left....quite amazing, my nails and hair are also much stronger and more healthy looking.
This may of course not be the problem at all, but it is definitely worth considering

Hope you get this sorted out!! Weemelon xx

        Truthy

Stress definitely contributes to alopecia - my husband had a bald patch for months but it grew back.

The key is relaxation however you chose to do it - hypnotherapy, holiday, acupuncture, sauna, gym etc.

Good luck and as melon says give up alcohol and you give up a shed load of health problems that go with it!!!

        Love

          Oh no what a thought

How alcohol affects your body | the Mail on Sunday

          HI

I did a search on "Hair loss and Alcohol" there were two things that got me, see attached and one DR said " Alcohol has a bad effect on hair just like it has on every other part of the body" so as people with drinking problems what do we have to look forward to - where appearance is concerned let not even talk about under the skin:

          Balding,
          Liver spots,
          red face,
          Bloated hands and face,
          leg ulcers,
          wrinkles,
          bad breath,
          blood shot eyes,

Thank heavens we wont have the memory to remember how we use to look.

          I hope the link helps.

I do recall when my alcohol consumption was out of hand that my hubby complained I "SHED" too much in the shower. After he said that I noticed that when I'd rinse my hair I'd have leftover hair in my hand!

Same with me SeaBreez. Husband constantly complains of my shedding hair all over the bathroom. Truthi - same thing happened to me. I am 35 now and losing hair like crazy. Hard to tell if it's hormonal from having babies or alcohol, or just that time... age... I am sure stress contributes to it somehow, and how you manage your stress. I am only 11 AF, but I'll let you know if I notice a change in my hair loss any time soon.

Good at being AF. Not so good at Moderation.

Hi DD. I have woken up many AF nights in the past with the shakes, extreme leg pain, heart racing, etc. And I am usually not able to go back to sleep. I have read that this coule be part of alcohol withdrawal. This time around I have been using GABA supplements at night and have not experienced any of that. I don't sleep as long as I would like to - usually waking after 5 hours or so, but it is a restful 5 hours and I am thankful for it.

Please don't feel like a failure, especially as a mother. You are trying to do something to improve yourself and that makes you a better mother. Just keep trying and don't quit.

As for the CDs, I am yet to find time to listen to them. I have 2 little ones. I could listen after they go to sleep I suppose but I just haven't yet. I am eager to start - it's just one of those things I need to throw myself into.

Sorry about your psoriasis (sp?). I've not had that problem but imagine it must be difficult. Maybe the medication just takes time. Hope you figure it out.

Remember that guilt does not take you where you want to be. Will and strength will get you there. So when the guilt comes, remind yourself that you have will and you are strong. Everyone falls down from time to time. As mothers, when our kids fall off the bike, we hug them and then pick them up and then what??? We ask them to try again. We send those little guys right back out there to try try again. And they go, and they succeed. You can too. You just have to pick yourself up and get right back on the bike and start pedaling. But first, hug yourself. Then go again.

                  Good Luck to you.

Thanks all for your kind words and advice. Special thanks to Kimmy for the link, what a good reminder of the effects of just 'relaxing'...after work! I appreciate the advice about stress as I wondered if that was factor and I suppose going AF will certainly go a long way in reducing stress both mentally and physically.

Made it through day one and on to day two!

                    thanks again...

                      Hi,

I also recommend you have your thyroid tested. That can be one of the main signs of hypothyroidism for which you can take a thyroid supplement.

DD, I like the all in one. You get a lot with just the powder. I mix it with water and the orange flavored metamucil (got to get my fiber, too) and it tastes like an Orange Julius. I use it to down the moutain of morning supps the program recommends.

If you love your son, which you clearly do, then you are obviously not a failure. Keep posting. You have nothing but friends here.
