    Antabuse question

I called my dr. and asked to be put on antabuse, they called it into the pharmacy and now I have to wait until tomorrow to pick it up.
    I
I'm a little nervous about taking this, I fear I am dumb enough to drink even though I know it will make me sick. Of course I also tend to worry about every little thing, but seriously...what will happen to me? What it I take it and then I'm craving once again and I fail and take it. I guess I don't know the dangers of mixing AL with AB.

Can anyone explain that too me? I mean I get that it will make me sick but Ive had the flu before and I lived through it. So what if I'm that stupid? I guess I just don't trust myself.

It takes one drink to produce a reaction. It takes one bottle of beer, one glass of wine, or one shot of liquor to become sick.

The normal sequence of the Antabuse reaction is:
    •Flushing of the face
    •Headache
    •Low blood pressure
    •Racing heart
    •Dizziness
    •Nausea and vomiting

If you have one drink, you will vomit about as much as if you had food poisoning.
If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic.

Yep, That's what happened to me when I drank on Antabuse. I only did it once cause it was NOT pleasant. I think Antabuse is a great tool. It takes the ability to have a drink out of impulse away. You have to really plan ahead several days and by then you can talk yourself back into staying sober. :goodjob:

        Antabuse question

I bumped up the Antabuse thread in the meds section. Spend some time in there first. I did and it SCARED ME TO DEATH! Good luck. I personally would never have started AB if I hadn't been 150% committed, but I know everyone is different.

          Antabuse question

Honey, the first time I got an antabuse prescription I didn't take it I was so scared! The next time I got it I did, but confided in a friend who was a nurse, and took the first one on a weekend knowing that she was at the end of a phone if I needed anything.

What happened was precisely nothing! No reactions when I put on perfume or deodorant that had alcohol in it (my Dr explained the chemistry about why there are no reactions between antabuse and alcohol if the only source of it is through topical applications), no symptoms of anything, no feeling weird etc etc.

I took it for 60 days. It didn't make the cravings go away, and I had some pretty difficult things happen during those 60 days. If I had been relying on will-power alone, there is no way I would have made it though. But I really didn't want to be sick (I travel a lot for my job and if I had drunk and got sick I would have had to explain to complete strangers, which I would not have been able to face) and even though there were times when I really wanted to drink, I somehow managed to not do so. And I can tell you that there were a number of times when I would be in the supermarket, or it would be a Friday afternoon, or a weekend when I could have killed for a drink. But I was too scared about the consequences if I did. So even though the cravings didn't disappear overnight, I managed to clock up time without alcohol and started to see the benefits, so it helped to break the cycle.

Give it a go Honey. Once you start there is no going back, but even if you are half-hearted about it to start with you may soon find yourself in the position where you can start to believe in yourself and your abilty to beat this beast Good luck!!

              ANTABUSE FACTS

              Hey honeysoup

I think you should know that if you take it and drink you will not necessarily have vomiting etc. You will feel the effect right away and if you have a lick of sense you will stop drinking. I doubt that you will continue to the point of vomiting. Once you start to get hot and you can feel your face flushing and your heart speed up, well at that point I'd say it's a damn good idea to stop drinking immediately.

                Hi Honey!
Did you pick up your AB? The sick you'll feel if you drink on it is nothing like the flu...you'll wish you ONLY had the flu! Ann is right though...the racing heart, flushed skin and general misery should be enough to deter you from continuing. I did have one very bad experience. Imagine The Poltergeist...that was me...projectile vomiting all night. I'll never forget that...please don't put yourself through it and just take my word for it! Good luck and keep us posted!

I don't have it yet, the pharmacy hasn't called to tell me they got it in. They didn't have it in stock and had to order it...so hopefully today. I am going to call them. Almost had a close call last night...The cravings were pretty bad. I made myself go to the gym and even on the way home all I could think about was drinking a cold glass of wine or Margaretta or mojito...ANYTHING!!!

But I was a good girl and let it pass...thank goodness I didn't have to wake up paranoid again. YAY ME!!!

                          Antabuse question

                          Don't Drink on Antabuse!

I'm with the others. Using antabuse is a great tool, but it doesn't remove the cravings.
Once you drink on it though, you'll never drink on it again!

It is a terrifying experience. I hyperventilated for over an hour before I woke my roommate up to take me to the ER. It was humiliating, and I only drank 1/2 glass of wine to cause that.

Be afraid of it, which is a good thing.

Like the others, using alcohol rubs, perfumes, etc. didn't have an effect, but drinking on it, well, that's another story.

                          Good luck!
