    What is your definition of "short time ago?" I don't define 150 years as a "short time." As for your the assertion that abolitionists were a minority, then it stands to reason that the majority of Americans would not have had a problem with the institution of slavery, so why then, would they have bothered fighting such a costly and bloody war. Furthermore, you're just plain wrong. The population of the Union states was approximately 22 million people. The population of the Confederate states was approximately 9 million, roughly a third of whom were slaves and presumably not in favor of slavery. So even accounting for the four slaves states that remained in the Union, a solid majority of Americans could be said to have been abolitionists. Sorry for the long-winded soapbox speech, but nothing makes me bristle more than mischaracterizations of the American character and history.
