    Liver pain

Hello has anyone ever felt discomfort in the liver area?

    Liver pain

    Hi Party Girl,

Yes - it is a sign that your liver is not doing well. I have experienced that too, and had a blood test, which revealed liver enzymes in my blood - inicating a fatty liver. This is the 1st stage of liver disease, and is a timely warning to stop drinking alcohol. I am about to embark on my own voyage to sobriety ... but no doubt will face rough seas and perhaps even shipwreck along the way! But I am glad that I am setting out. If you have liver discomfort and you're here, I think that you are aking steps in the right direction. :goodjob:

      Liver pain

      Hi Party Girl,

I also started to seriously think about quitting when my liver area started really hurting. Definitely not a good sign. Quitting can definitely be done, so never fear.

Come over to the Newbies Nest and chill with us for a while. It's the place for us newbs to get comfort and support in the early days.

Talisman, that goes for you, too. I have read a couple of your posts today and I can tell you wil be an asset to the forum. Please stick around, both of you.
Well it's all right now. I've learned my lesson well. You see you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.

        Liver pain

        Hello Party Girl,
I, personally, have not had any pain in my right upper abdomen. However I also have elevated liver enzymes and the Dr. I was seeiing palpated my liver and said it is enlarged. After that I started making plans to get AL out of my life, did a lot of research & reading, and as of right now have +34 hours and counting. The thing is, according to what I have read, your liver often does not cause symptoms you can feel or recognize early on.
I totally echo Siren 136... hoping both you and Talisman come to the Newbies Nest and join your hopes and intentions with us. There is so much support and caring...
        Be Well,

Its definitely something to look into. The liver is one of
most self healing organs if caught early. Fatty liver can be reversed
with abstinence. Scarred liver or any other advanced diseases
usually require a transplant. Exercises that makes you
sweat a lot are very benefitial as they rid the entire body of toxins esp.

The liver no doubt has a crucial role to play in processing alcohol, but there is a limit to how much it can process. When the person drinks too much alcohol, i.e. more than what can be processed by the liver, it puts excessive load on the liver, making it work harder to metabolize alcohol, and eventually ends up damaging it. As a result of this damage, the process of metabolism is hampered, which eventually results in adverse effects on the body. Liver pain due to drinking, a common problem associated with alcohol addiction, is one such adverse effect of alcohol on the body.

Time to re - think your realationship with booze ?
If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic.

Thank you everyone! I know I need to stop! As you all know it is so hard to say goodbye to my best friend booze! I have had the liver pain for a while now. My liver enzymes were normal . I almost feel like I need some sort of medical test to prove to me I need to stop but I know I need to stop despite,! I quit drinking for about 7 years but have been drinking again for about 10 years. It only takes a bottle of wine to put me out (maybe that's a sign). I drink a bottle of wine about 4 days a week. I drink a whole bottle over 1.5 to 2 hours. I feel like crap the next day and sleep most of the day away. I have isolated myself and avoid going out . It helps to talk about it.

                    Liver pain

                    Hey Party Girl,

A new member here has recommended ornithine aspartate, or a formula containing it as the best liver cleanser. He says he has tried them all. I had never heard of it before.

I always used milk thisle and lots of water with lots of fresh lemon squeezed into it. The milk thistle (available at any health food store) should be a good brand, not generic, and should say 'standanrdized to 80% silymarin content' (the active ingredient). It costs about $12 per bottle.

The ones I take are 150mg each and I take two in the am, two at midday and one at night. I believe 750mg is considered the therapeutic dose. Milk thistle has been around for over 2,000 years and does not conflict with any known meds. It is really miraculous in its power to neutralize free radicals and helps to regenerate new liver tissue.

Fresh lemon juice also helps to cleanse the liver, adds vitamin C, and alkalinizes the body, a good thing. The water re-hydrates the body, which is very important when detoxing.

I have always taken milk thistle, even when I was drinking, and have never had liver problems. I have done some pretty serious drinking over decades, with a few breaks of sobriety. I now have 79 days sober, thanks to My Way Out. That's after years of chronic relapse in AA and countless day ones.

There is a lot of encouragement and support here and lots of advice shared from people all over the world on what is working for each of them. Some people use meds, some supplements and vitamins, along with diet changes, to help cravings and to heal. There is no 'one size fits all'. Some people use multiple strategies, including attending 12 step meetings. Whatever works for you. There is also a mwo book, cds, and lots of resourses and info available here.

Join us over in the Newbie's Nest, under "Just Starting Out'. There are people over there in all stages of their quit. New people are joining all the time, some starting out, some starting over. There is also a Newbie's Nest roll call, for those who want to check in daily. There is a 'toolbox' of very practical tips for staying sober. Many members have the link in their signature line. Read back a few days/weeks on the Newbie's Nest and get to know us. So glad you are here. We look forward to getting to know you!
