Has anyone tried AA
Hey GMC
Welcome. I think AA CAN help, depending on the individual. It does not help me but there a lot of people here who do that. I am an atheist so I cannot reconcile the religiosity. Actually a friend asked me to go with her to a meeting for atheists and I am going.
But all in all it's not for me.
Some people are certainly helped by their involvement in AA. You might want to try it and see

Has anyone tried AA
Hello GMC,
AA helped my dad immensely. Kept him sober for 9 or 10 years until he passed away (he didn't die from alcoholism, but another tragic terminal illness). It also seemed to help many of his friends.
However, it never helped me. I found it difficult to deal with the moral/religious core of its philosophy, and any meetings I did go to always made me feel that I didn't have a problem (I do!!!!! But being someone who drinks to extreme excess only once a week, I never seemed to relate to other people's experiences in the group) -- which actually worked against me rather than helping me.
I agree with Ann though that it is always worth exploring just in case it is a good fit for you.

Are you kidding everyone here has tried AA.......It's a matter if your getting anything from it or not. A lot of people can't deal with the "Steps". That's ok were here to help too. Some go to meetings and come here. What ever works. Keep fighting ! Good Luck ! Tony?Be who you are and say what you feel because
those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.?

Has anyone tried AA
i'm in aa and i've been sober since 10/6/2012
i am also an atheist...as the saying goes, take what you need and leave the rest. the meetings bring me immense support and fellowship. only an alcoholic can truly understand another alcoholic, and in aa, we're all alcoholics!
adit to add, i wish there was an atheist group near me! sounds interesting anna carolina! i never say the lord's prayer, and on my steps, i used my perception of a "higher power" (the universe) to do the steps. i also have a hard time saying i am "powerless" over alcohol, because after all, i am staying sober, but i know that if i were to pick up a drink, that would be it, and i would be back to square one...as long as i don;t take that first drink, i'm golden10-06-2012

give it a few chances, at first you'll have no idea whats going on, but it gets easier and more comfortable after a few. also really use what you can and forget the rest. there isn't supposed to be any talk of politics or religion or anything other than what it was like when we were drinking, how we got sober and what it's like now, so if there is, make sure and mention it. it's all about making it through and getting sober and learning how to live sober...i hope i don;t sound like i'm preaching, it's just what i've found so take it or leave it10-06-2012

I go to AA everyday. I am not "sold" on the whole program. I have no religion in my life so the whole God thing is bothersome. I also find it hard to do the steps to the degree they seem to expect. I work full time and am very busy. During the short time I find myself free I want to relax and unwind, not WORK. PLUS, I have such a high bottom that I too find it difficult to relate to most stories. There is only one reason I go: because I want to stay sober. So, I take just what I want from it and leave the rest. I am going because it might be helping me even if I don't even realize it. Plus, it is nice to meet other sober people!!! With them, you can be completely honest - just like you can be here.....only you are actually face to face with the person.
I do not want to stop going to AA for now because even if I don't realize it, it MIGHT be helping me stay sober. I am not going to risk that by not going. Once I have more AF time under my belt, I will explore this more.I just won't anymore
