    I can do this

    I know, for certain, that I will not miss being hungover, lol. Nor will I miss the morning-after regret/shame/crushing depression. None of that is worth a few hours of "fun."

    At the moment I am having some serious sugar/carb cravings; it is taking all of my willpower to not go to the store right this minute to buy doughnuts and chocolate. I will, in all likelihood, get both immediately after work though...

      Hi,Mkiser,welcome,here is a good spot to be,l never thought l would quit,but l did,54 days today,l thought it would be harder, at first it was cause l drank my wine often,almost every day,maybe not on Tuesday or Sunday,but pretty close to a lot,l had more than 1 bottle,1 didn't quite cut it,so as it went up ,l said l better quit,before its way out of hand,my husband and son are thrilled with me,l am thrilled with me, l lost weight l look good and LM only getting better,thanks to my decision to quit the devil,alcohol". I know you can do this ,set your mind that it,s only a thought and a thought can be changed,might help,on some nights go to bed early if that helps,you know it's only as easy as we make it ,if we want it to be,read lots of books,and this site,there are a lot of books tell you how alcohol wrecks havoc on our bodies and brain,you made the right choice,l' m happy LM on this journey as well.you got this ,you will be great!

        I had exactly the same sweet cravings! I would say indulge for now.. Worry about one thing at a time. Think of the calories you used to drink.,. It won't hurt to have a little chocolate or a doughnut if it will help you in this period of adjustment (it definitely seemed to help me!).
        There is a pole on here and over 50% (the last time I checked), reported a craving for carbs/sweets when not drinking alcohol!

          Definitely have the chocolate, doughnut or whatever else you fancy to make the break with AL easier. The rollercoaster emotions pass to leave the most amazing sense of calm and peace so very well worth sticking it out.

          I used to drink well over a bottle of wine every day (and anything else I could find) and although I had no physical withdrawal symptoms I am still very aware that I no longer drink. Nobody else gives a damn now.

              I too drank at least a bottle of wine a night but had no real withdrawals except complete fatigue and a nagging dull headache that lasted about 5 days. Each person's reaction to withdrawal is different. As is each person's addiction to AL.

              MKiser: Are you familiar with HALT? HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. These four issues are the biggest triggers that lead one to drink.....
              So, if you have a craving, think HALT. If you are feeling any one of these things, then that is why you are craving. If you can recognize that, it is easier to surf the urge until it passes. And IT WILL PASS!!!
              If you are hungry, EAT
              If you are angry, come to the nest and tell us about it!!
              If you are lonely, come to the nest and tell us about it!!!
              If you are tired, SLEEP

              With each sober day behind you, your husband will come around....
              I am glad you joined us!!
              I just won't anymore

                jenniech, I have heard of HALT before (from past AA meetings I think, I never really clicked with AA), and it definitely applies to my drinking, anger being the worst of the lot, the one that usually ended with me blacking out.

                Last night was a little difficult, but I indulged in whatever else I was craving and tried to relax, and here I am at day 4! I'm still feeling pretty optimistic and I am trying to change my way of thinking from " I can't drink" to "I don't need to drink," reminding myself of how terrible it is for my health, myself, and my family. Especially when I feel the "poor me" thoughts coming on, which happen frequently.

                    My bottle of wine habit was for the last 8 years or so. Before that it was loads more starting with wine at lunch, a couple of huge martinis(gin and a splash of vermouth), wine then spirits after - that went on for over 20 years.

                    God knows how I am still alive but somehow I am.

                      Same here spiderwomen, My drinking in over 40 years just got heavier and heavier. It has taken me a few years and with the help of MWO have finally accepted that I can't drink anymore. Tried moderation last year,what a disaster!! I am an alcoholic for god sake. I am 17 days af and although I still have a few cravings they are more maneagable as time goes on. As everyone says, IT DOES get easier and is so worth it!

                      Mkiser,You are doing well. JUST hang in there and keep close to MWO. Spider, I to wonder how I am still alive, but luckliy I am! Good Luck Guys.Stay STRONG.

                        Hello Nesters, Hope you all are having a Fab af Sat. I am about to go out to a restuarant and am well armed with some diet coke to give the beast the big boot!!! I am finding that EACH time I am confronted with alcohol and say NO, I get stronger and the cravings get much easier to manage. For me, confronting the devil head on is very important in my journey to rid myself of AL forever !!! Wishing you all well this W/E.

                          Hello -

                          Back for another update: Friday night was a bit difficult. I, unwisely and because of the foul mood I was in, began questioning my husbands drinking habits which just led to a fight (he had already been drinking for a while). I didn't drink though! Normally that would have been it for me, but I took a bath and went to bed instead.

                          Saturday was also annoying, but a talk with my mom and a almost entire day with family (most of whom don't drink or don't drink much) helped distract me.

                          So I've made it to day 6 and am feeling rather calm today :-)

                            Well done on Day 6. The first few days are a bit rough! We have decided to break up a relationship with al while others around us continue. Just tough it out.You owe it to yourselfand will handle situations around you much better without a hangover or that constant nagging feeling about when and where you will have that next drink!!! ONE thing is for sure, and I have finally accepted it, IT DOES GET EASIER! Just keep going. I have found to I am much calmer without al. Good Luck!:goodjob:

                              It gets better! Determination and knowing that your body is a temple and deserves to be treated like one helps though!!
                              I'm on day 7, gotta say though, medication and vitamins have been my lifeline, oh and I live on my own so if someone who has nobody to feel guilty in front of or be accountable to can live without alcohol, you can too!! I'm not even tempted, each sober day is more exciting than the previous one!!

                                Here I am at day 8 and I really really want a glass of wine. I had another monumental fight with my husband yesterday. He informed me that he will continue to drink heavily in front of me regardless of how I feel about it. He took it as a personal affront when I told him that it made me uncomfortable, at least at this early stage, and asked him to not do it. He is not really supportive of my not drinking. He informed me that he doesn't think that alcohol is my problem but that serious character defects, which he doubts are fixable, are. I pointed out that I don't behave so badly when I am not 10 drinks in and angry but he did not listen. I am really at the end of my rope with this relationship. He is mean and makes me feel worthless (name calling, yelling, and such). I suspect that my sobriety is not going to have much of a positive impact on our relationship.
