    New... Need info

I am new to the site.... I have had a terrible time recently. My husband and I noticed a change in me after my last daughter was born 8 yrs ago. I felt anxious , had quit my lucrative job to stay home and I felt depressed.... But thought it would pass... My mom died in a tragic accident while the kids and I were on vaca w her a few yrs ago and we found her.... It was devastating... My dad committed suicide when i was 9. But I had a wonderful career, life.... Just drank socially w o a problem...recently I have fallen in a hole... My step dad is very ill, so I have been drinking to escape. Not daily or weekly, just when I feel overwhelmed... I see a therapist... But need more help. I went my kids school to pick them up drunk... Luckily I didn't and my husband got them.... I am hopefully going to do an outpatient program this week.. I am excited!!! Has anyone tried Antabuse??? Hoping to try that....any guidance would be appreciated:new::ne

Kohl mom, I'm sorry you haven't received a response yet...being a holiday weekend many folks are out and about. Let me invite you to 2 places on this site. The Newbie's Nest is where many folks begin their AF journey (some, like me, never leave!!) we can help you with the how-to's etc. We are very supportive and have folks in every stage of his/her quit. Please join us there, it is an active thread and there are several folks taking Antabuse there, too. Other than with AL, most have no side effects from it that I've heard. You will be in good company, go to the last page for the most current. Also find the Tool box (both links are in my signature line below). It's full of 100's of tips and ideas to help you thru the first challenging days and weeks. This is a great place for support, so if you are ready to be free of this Beast, you've come to the right place! I'll look for you in the nest!! Byrdie

      Kohl mom,

      First let me say :welcome:

You have found a great place with great supportive people to help beat this thing called AL. Take it one day at a time and if you get the urge just read and post. This has helped me so many times.

I am sorry to hear of your tradgeys. I lost my mom at 16 and it has been a struggle ever since. I have also lost many close family members since, the last was my brother in law in March to cirrohis( can't spell). These things are hard by theirself but combined with AL its a no win.

The hurt and pain is still going to be there when we sober up. So take byrdies advice and jump in the nest. It's very nice and cozy. And please if you feel you need to vent or just talk POST! That is why we are here.

Keep us updated on your progress and anything we can do to help.

Hello Khol Mum, Welcome to MWO. You have taken the first step in your recovery in coming to MWO for help.. Well done ! I have been struggling with al abuse for years. The only success I have had is with taking AB. Lots of folks on here do use it and have had some amazing results. I would suggest you make an app with your doctor and talk over your problems withwith him/her. AB is not a drug to mess with. If you drink whilst taking it the consequences are serious. Vomiting, headaches, hot flushing its like all your hangovers at once. BUT what it does do is remove the mind games;DO I drink or DON'T I etc etc YOU just can't! I find that because the decision to drink is out of the equation,it does have some effect on the length and severity of the cravings. I am now 18 days af. I know without ab and mwo I wouldn't be here sober!! Good Luck. There are lots of wonderful people here who will help you..... Just call out. Read and Post. Good Luck and let us know how you get on.:welcome::welcome:

Just wanted to say hi and second the motion by Byrdie - the Nest is active and you'll find lots of support there.

I think most of us drink to numb the painful parts of our lives. There isn't anyone here who doesn't understand what you're going through. The more you can read and post the better. Let us know how the outpatient program goes.

          Best to you,
          UN

Thanks all... I am excited about the outpatient program.... I go for weeks don't drink... But I do feel like I need help bc I don't want to go on like this. I never have a hangover... I am small so it doesn't take much... My therapist said I am a binger and I agree. I am going Tuesday and ask the Dr for Antabuse. I have not drank in a week... But want help to continue... Does anyone feel the same??? I doubt I will ever drink again... Feel good today!!

Well Done Kohl Mom, You are making decisions and moving fwd. I have found AB and amazing crutch in beating al. Lots of people have found success with it. We all need help to continue on this journey otherwise we probably would't be here. Good Luck. Is your visit to the DR tomorrow?

Yes....my dr appt is tomorrow. Very excited. I like to run, exercise and live a healthy life... But lately I haven't. I think the AB will help if I get the urge... I also have a DUI hearing Thursday.... Big week. I have never even had a speeding ticket. I did not blow... And the officer drove me home. I wonder if I will get driving privileges to take my kids to school, see my dad at the hospital and take my husband to his cardiologist appts... I hope also by doing the outpatient program on my own that will look good to the judge... No clue. I am ready to be honest and face the music.

                  KM,

Sending you peace and strength. Good luck with the hearing and your outpatient program. I think you are SO smart to get into exercising - really important because it creates dopamine in our brains and can counteract cravings!!

                    Hi, Kohl mom,

Welcome. You sound like you're at a turning point. Good for you! You mention your anxiety and you asked about Antabuse. I'd suggest that you look into baclofen. You can find threads about it in the medical section here. I started baclofen in Dec 2012 and my anxiety is gone and alcohol is such a foreign thought to me. My mental state is so unbelievably different today. It's just a thought.

                    Best luck to you,

                    kronk

I will look in to back often for sure... Went to the outpatient appt yesterday and it was not what they said on the phone... It is group 3 days a week for 3 hours and u are required to go to two AA meetings a week. I thought u work one on one w an alcohol counselor- dr... And if u choose to do group or AA u can. They rec. me to a counselor that comes highly recommended who works one on one... More up my alley. I see him tomorrow. Still not drank. Slept @ hospital last night w my dad and this morning we ordered breakfast and he had a heart attack! I called a nurse twice ... Took forever for her to come... If I were not here he could not have called for anyone. I am so blessed to have been here. It sucks sleeping @ a hospital.. On another note... My DUI might be dropped bc the police did not seize my license- other things and I still have a valid license ... I have amazing guarding angels!!!!! It is not luck... Everything happens for a reason. Thanks for all of the support... I can not wait to talk to my alcohol counselor and move forward- tomorrow is the day. I have someone coming to be w my dad while I go...
