    Need your help please!

    Hi,
I've been reading on here a lot of late & know that I need to really do something about my drinking, as I've known for years.
I'm in England & really don't want to see my doctor to get some drugs to help me with this constant battle.
I've read loads on Antabuse & Topamax & have searched sites where I can buy medication to help me. I thought I'd try Topamax to help with the cravings & I see recommendations for Rivers Pharmacy. Has anyone gone this route on their own? Can you recommend Rivers? Do you get the genuine drug, or are they con artists?
    Any advice very gratefully received.
    Thank you.

Hi mlisa!! Welcome to MWO and congrats on your decision to get healthy! I didn't want to go to my doctor, either, though I did speak to him 'off the record' and let him know what I was doing.

I ordered my Antabuse from River and had no trouble. I have seen others here say the same thing. They are definitely no con-artists. The only trouble with River is that it takes forever to get the meds, at least when delivered to the US.

Whatever you decide, please let this forum help, too. There's lots of folks here who have been where you are and can help.

    :welcome:
Well it's all right now. I've learned my lesson well. You see you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.

Thanks Siren136, really appreciate your reply. Good that you could talk to your doc "off the record"! Did you use Antabuse or Topamax? I've read some horror stories about Antabuse, but if I took it, I wouldn't drink...& that can only be a very good thing!
      Thanks again.

I took Antabuse and it worked great. It takes the choice out of the equation.

        Good luck!

The fear of what could happen would stop me, and that's what I need. I'm going to put the money not spent on booze aside & treat myself to new clothes when all the alcohol weight falls off...2 & a half stone. Ouch! I'm great at controlling what food I put into my mouth, but when it comes to booze, I tell myself that liquid doesn't count...

            Need your help please!

Hi mlisa, I'm also in the UK and after getting drunk at a friends BBQ yesterday have decided I urgently need to do something about my drinking. Once I start drinking wine, I just can't stop and will sneak about topping up my glass when noone's looking just to get that hit. I can go Mon to Thurs/Fri with no Al but come the weekend, those demons just won't leave me alone. I feel crap all day and can't wait until the evening to have a drink to pep me up again. I have a wonderful husband (who couldn't care less about Al) and two beautiful children, but the cravings always get the better of me and this has been going on for years. I approached a Dr about 5 years ago who told me 'if I didn't stop drinking I'd destroy my family', not what I wanted to hear so I'm definately not going back. I've read MWO several times and am going to order Topamax from River Pharmacy as I'm not strong enough to beat this addiction with will power alone. Good luck with whatever meds you decided to go with and let us know how you get on xx

Well, today I was so confident, as usual, that I would give it up & all would be well. By 3pm, the need to drink was so strong. I gave in at 4.30 & had a few beers, of course it would only be a few & that would be fine. Now, I've almost finished my 2nd bottle of wine & more will follow. I need to get medication to help me as I know I can't do this alone. I've done 2 days AF before, but that has been it. I managed to abstain during my 2 pregnancies because I had a good reason not to drink, but I can't seem to manage without that reason. Good luck to you too, I really hope we can all crack this!!!! x

Hi mlisa- please don't stress about what a doctor would think if you are in need of help, who cares what they say? I got to a point where I needed to tell someone rather than lie to myself so I told the doctor, he was the first one I was honest with about my problem then I found MWO and I can finally be honest about my problem with alcohol.
It was the best thing I did- I told him 22 days ago and have been AF since. I was given a script for 2 months of Campral and I can't wait to go back to him and tell him I'm ready for my next script because this time I will be standing tall saying 'thank you Doc, if I hadn't have told you and if you hadn't have given me Campral I would have spiralled further down'.
I wish you the best, please don't feel so scared of what people think, it's your health!! Stick close to MWO, read peoples stories and look at the Toolbox, you aren't alone!

                    Welcome Mlisa!

How are you doing today? I just wanted to chime in and offer my support. I know it seems impossible, but you CAN beat this. I drank everyday for 10+ years....12-14 beers per day. I thought I would never change, but guess what...I have been alcohol free for 531 days, and my life has never been better. You can achieve this too if you want it more than ANYTHING. You should come on over to the Newbies Nest...there's lots of support and advice there. We're glad to have you here...stick close!

                      Dear mlisa,

I also want to extend a warm welcome. I hear your fear and despair and loss of hope. I was in that exact same place about five months ago. Then I stumbled across the MWO website and found the hope and help that I needed.

I spend most of my time in Newbies Nest because people there are often in their first few hours, days, weeks, or months of sobriety. We are free to be honest and speak openly about our struggles. Others with longer stretches of sobriety share their wisdom and support.

We have all been in so much pain, mlisa, and we have all done ridiculous and embarrassing things while drunk (or even in an effort to get the booze to get drunk). None of us are here the judge. No... we have been brought to our knees by alcohol.

Keep posting, if you can. It will help you so much!! We are HAPPY that you are here!! :kewl:

Yes, minqua, there are quite a few things that you can do in the evenings to keep yourself preoccupied from drinking: 1) Get ALL alcohol out of your home. 2) Don't get anywhere near the store where you usually buy alcohol. If possible do not get in your car. If you must drive, take a different route. 3) Post on the MWO website, any thread. People will "talk you down" from your desire to drink. 4) Take a walk, weather permitting. It helps to breathe.

                              Hey minqua,

I honestly don't know where or how to get Antabuse. But I believe there is a medications thread (or something like that) here on MWO. (It's obvious that I don't stray too far from Newbies Nest.) Of course, a physician is your best bet -- but I understand completely that's not always possible.

Okay, but others (I believe many others) have had success with Antabuse. And possibly someone will be along to give you information. But, you know, more people have questions here than there are people to give answers. So please, search the entire MWO website. Others have said that every question ever asked has been answered in the years that people have been posting on MWO.

                              And keep posting. ~
