Planning Ahead for a Family Event

I'm glad your planning ahead! Having a fun drink you can make a virgin version of is a great idea moheitos are great for that and you can experiment with them Just saying no thanks is really all it takes...if they ask questions as to why just shrug and say I don't drink or I'm not drinking and look them dead in the eye and smile lol. Usually it doesent go further than that unless try are really drunk in wich case I pull the " so and so, go home your drunk" and laugh it off.

I do my best not to shy away from it if people seem genuinely interested and just say "if I'm gonna drink I'm gonna DRINK and I'm not up for that tonight...I've partied enough over the years lol" personally I just find it easier to own it and its become something I'm proud of and others admire. I don't let anyone make me feel odd or shy about it, I suck it up and make sure I'm not doing that to myself above all.

Take the time to give yourself a reality check before going in...remind yourself of the truth about alchohol and it's effects and maybe even make a point of observing the drinking habits of those around you and the changes in them as they drink? Sometimes it's educational, others entertaining, from time to time embarrassing, and one in a while a bit scary. Doing this always makes me happy as I know I won't have any regrets the next day guaranteed lol.

This all helped me alot, and I used it successfully tonight ( had a geat time and now I'm home, sober and safe)

Finally if you do somehow find yourself stuck with a glass in your hand for a toast or something, don't be shy to just put it down and walk away from it! If someone calls you on it pick it up and hand it to them and insist they drink it

Hope you find something here that works for you! Keep us posted

Thanks decided. I noticed no one seemed too interested in what I drank. I made AF punch and it was a big hit but so sweet I got a headache. One guy asked if I wanted him to spike my glass and I said no I'm going for a sugar high today, then I walked away!

decided you're prolly right, not enough water. I had enough punch to put me into a diabetic coma though! I hope next weekend I can slow down on the sugar I have another family weekend coming up! These are the real drinkers too. I think mojitos will be going around, I wonder if they're good without AL? I'll let you know!!

Hey June I had HUGE sugar cravings for a while but recently they have slowed down...you joke about the diabetic coma but I'd eat so much candy I'd literally pass out sometimes hehehe. I'd say don't worry about it just focus on the drinking the rest will sort itself. And Mohitos???amazing without booze had 2 last night...well a variation on one raspberry lelichi mint lime. soda water syrup line and mint are also pretty good! I'm still getting periods of antsy-ness since that damn glass of bubbles ( I haven't had since quitting until now). How long has it been for you again?

decided I am a newbie, just three weeks AF. I was just online looking up AF punch and drink recipes and sure enough came across the AL ones. Sigh. I know what I am missing isn't reality. The notion of sipping on a cocktail is just so different than the stupid drunk, not knowing when to stop, all night sweating and tossing and turning and waking up feeling like crap. That's reality. But I digress. AF mojitos are good? Awesome!!

3 June, Have you considered taking AF beer? I have taken it to many social events and enjoyed the taste and it worked for me. To be honest though I never found anyone really noticed or cared what I was drinking. good Luck.

Planning Ahead for a Family Event

So tomorrow starts my second family gathering challenge. This will be tough because its traditionally a big drinking weekend. But I am thinking up activities and planning AF drinks. It will be fine. I love being sober. I really do.

Hey you! Just catching up on your progress...I'm so happy to hear that you are loving the sober life your going to b fine tomorrow No doubt...just a thought on ad beer, I know it works for some but personally I tried that on a past quit and-like you said- ended up with a 40oz of the real strong stuff before I knew it. There is usually .5 percent alchohol in non al beer and I don't know if my body detected it after being sober or if my brain was like " I'm I see the beer bit where's the buzz" but I wouldn't risk go there again just because I've already tried it. Have fun 2morrow!

June you're doing great. Keep it up. These events are hard. I know. But sometimes watching how the al affects those drinking reminds me why I don't.
No matter how far you go or how fast you run, you can't get away from yourself. ....said at an AA meeting. It stuck with me.

Honestly? I'm finding the drunks irritating and I am a little bored. But not because I can't drink, I am totally cool with that.
