OK...I'm going to try this again and perhaps ask my doctor to give me Topomax or something....my question is how to best do this...."Hey Doc, I'm a lush....I want Topomax..."...I am going to a new doctor who doesn't know me...I can't imagine a doctor just writing a prescription like this because I go in and ask....any online places one can request this a bit easier?...I just want to stop before this kills me.

Go to the Topamax, Campral, Naltrexone, Baclofen, other meds thread. Lots of info where to get Topa online.

Or you could print out info off the internet on Topa (go to the Home Page here) and find the research articles & print those off & show them to your Dr. Explain you have a problem with alcohol & want to stop and found friends that have taken Topa & have these articles that back-up that Topa helps with cravings.

I just read all the info on Topa on their web site...I take Lipitor and Zestrel and wanted to make sure there wasn't any possible interaction...doesn't seem like there is so I'm going to go for it. I'd stop taking either for awhile if I had to just to get some help with this...
Glad the Topa is giving you your life back...I'm tired of mine being taken away...I want it back too!

This is what I wrote to someone else and it was worked for me. Yes, I did have to say that I had a drinking problem. But I told them that I wanted to change and that I wanted their help. Good luck to you!

I am not in Atlanta but when I went to my doctor, I took the book and some news articles from the Internet about Topa and alcohol. I even took the reprint from the medical journal that conducted the original test with Topamax. I did not trust myself to adequately describe the program and it's success. My doctor did not prescribe Topa that day but asked if she could look all the material over and get back to me and that's exactly what she did. She called me two weeks later and gave me the prescription. She felt better about it and actually so did I. Sure, I would have loved to have been able to walk out of there with the prescription in hand that day, but when I finally got it, I felt like I had a qualified second opinion AND, I had someone who was really on my side and was willing to work with me on dosage and possible side effects. I feel like I can call her anytime and she will be available to talk to me about what is going on. This is still relatively new stuff to some doctors and I think they appreciate patients who can help them with some upfront info instead of just taking a leap of faith and hoping they don't lose their licenses by prescibing meds for off labels uses.
