    Anyone know a good proven taper schedule?

    I have been trying to taper, but sometimes I slip up and it's the same old vicious cycle. It also sucks that I am on a small island in Asia that doesn't have great medical support or support groups. I have actually found Khudzu roots from a Korean herb lady at a market and have been boiling it and making tea. It seems to be helping and I finally found L-glutamine. So I have the tools and my girlfriend is being supportive of my decision to stop drinking so that is good. I am scared to just go cold turkey because of lack of medical supervision. I REALLY want to live again and be free of alcohol forever. If anyone has a taper schedule that doesn't affect workdays please let me know. Thanks.

    spicoli I can't help as I quit cold turkey but maybe on the meds thread or the moderation thread you can get some answers? I applaud your decision to quit. It will change your life for the better I promise!

      :welcome: to MWO.

      It sounds like you have good support from your girlfriend, and that is critical at this stage.

      As for tapering. How much are you currently drinking? Do you suffer withdrawals when you are not drinking?

      Several here have tapered successfully, and I helped my son taper recently.

      Let us know so we can advise as best as possible.

        hi spicoli,like cinders says it all depends on how much/what your drinking,the suggested poison of choice to drink to taper is beer,i was only a beer drinker at LEAST a twelve pack a day,the most i counted in one day was 30,so yeah a very heavy drinker,i would just start cutting back,if i had 14 one day,the next day would be 10,then 8,etc,usually taper about 1 week maybe 2 but you have to stick with it no"f-it,im gonna get drunk"dont want to start all over,use the al as medication just to ease withdrawal,this is what worked for me,im not a doc,and everybodys different,also the kudzu should help,i found it hard to drink too much on it,it kinda makes me feel full or something,then kinda nauseas,anyways it helped me,good luck to you

        Drinkin won't help a damn thing! Will only make me sick for DAYS and that ugly, spacey dumb feeling-no thanks!

          Sorry I am just getting back to you. On this island I often drink a Korean drink called Soju-It is like a rice wine and I can drink two bottles of it. But I think I am going to start with beer and nothing else. I can drink 12 beers. Some of you went cold turkey. How hard was it and did you have the DT's. I am embarrassed to say this, but I think I have had at least one drink every day for a year now. I am so scared of DT's, but I am existing and not living no more. Did anyone use L-Glutamine too? I need all the help I can get. Thanks.

            Hi Spicoli, first let me say welcome and glad you are here. I don't know much about tapering because I decided to just quit cold turkey. I was surprised that I didn't go through the DTs since I have drank heavily, every day, for decades. However, I did support my body before and during withdrawal by using supplements and other holistic treatments. Have you checked out the Health Store? Lots of quality supps for sale there that may help. Also, there are threads here that discuss using prescription meds and also a holistic healing thread. When I first got here, I spent days just reading. It may have saved my life.

            As Cinders said, you have a girlfriend supporting you and that is huge. Emotional support is so important. So keep posting. We are here for you.

              I drank heavily for 5 years every night. I, too, quit cold turkey. I did not have any DT's. I was a little short of temper for a couple of weeks. I used the L-Glutamine and I do believe it helped. I found it helpful to read "Rational Recovery" and "The Easy Way to Stop Drinking". I think for about 6 months I knew I wanted badly to quit, so I kept reading and lurking on this site. I enjoyed reading Dr. Wayne Dyer's stuff, not about drinking but just getting positive.

              Hope you stay around and enjoy getting sober.

                  This won't be what you want to hear but the most successful taper I know is to just stop. Yes it can be dangerous but as you know so is tapering.

                  You have to be really strict with tapering and stick to it, hope you get free of this and soon.
                  I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

                  Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years
