Day 3.5 Need Advice of Symptoms

So I stopped alcohol consumption about 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning. It was a binge situation, drank heaving 4 days prior. Passed out and awoke 4:45 Thurs afternoon. Decided to stop drinking. Have not had a drink since that time. I have been extremely thirsty which is understandable. Have been consuming lots of H2O. Friday I had a hard time concentrating, felt like I had sea legs when I walked. Not really hungry but ate a little. Sat, felt about the same but about 25% better than Friday. Sunday woke up, still dehydrated, still have the sea legs. Eyes are still glassy.

I lost my job Monday and that is one of the reasons this pity party started. My family is extremely displeased with me. They think I have wasted a week looking for a job. Which is true, I spent the the first four drinking. Friday I could talk and communicate well but could not focus when looking at my P.C. Sat I felt like should get my body back in shape. This a.m. I fell much better but they think I should be aggressive looking for a job.

I would like to know what is realistic to be back at 98-100%?
When will the sea legs go away? My head feels light headed when I have been sitting for a while and then get up, is that common?

Day 3.5 Need Advice of Symptoms

Pauly is right - it takes about a week to detox, even though symptoms may subside sooner. You mentioned that you ate "a little." Alcohol kills your appetite (at least it did mine), and it was difficult to eat the first few days of withdrawal. I don't know if you're experiencing that, but if you are, make yourself eat. Your body needs fuel to repair itself and not eating just prolongs the withdrawals. Even just a few bites at a time if need be.

Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

There are plenty of tools available on MWO to help you cope with withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal is serious business check out the " need help " thread for sure. If you are at a point where you are even remotely concerned don't hesitate to see your Doctor. Detox is different for everyone and I hope you are on feet sooner rather that later.

          Thanks!

          Pauly, Alky and TJAF,

Thank you so much! I feel so much better mentally! Thanks for the encouragement.

          All advise is fully welcomed.

I feel so bad for what I have put my family members thru. However I was feeling so guilty today when they were so upset that I have not gained back my drive to start the job search process. It has been really hard the past few days to concentrate plus I thought what if someone wants me to interview right away. I don't think I'm on my "A" game. I want to be there yesterday but I'm not physically. They seem to think that since I have decided not to drink that I need to "get over it" (the job) and start doing something. I have my resume up to date, which I think is the hardest part. It will be really easy to start posting for positions. My first priority is to get my body back in shape, which I have abused for awhile. I am glad to hear that a week is normal. I was beginning to think that maybe they are right and I should physically be better.

I have gone through withdrawal too many times to count but one thing is constant. Folks that haven't have no idea of this particular hell. In general they write it off to a common hangover, something we did to ourselves that a little coffee can somehow cure. You cant bow down and ignore what you have to do to get through the next few weeks. If you dont concentrate on recovery you are headed for a relapse, and trust me with each relapse withdrawal becomes worse. Take care of yourself and if you can can have an honest discussion with those you care about the most. Its much easier with family support.

Day 3.5 Need Advice of Symptoms

My mom went into the hospital for a kidney infection that led to a blood infection. While in the hospital, she took a turn for the worse and my brother and I were called in to sit bedside. At that time, we learned that she was also going through al withdrawal. She was a vodka drinker, but living alone, neither my brother or I knew exactly how much she was consuming. She had hallucinations and was delirious for several days and at 84 the docs prepared us. They were not sure she was going to come through it. She did in fact come through and has been AF for a year now. Granted you are much younger and your body much stronger, but I'm scared for you. I don't know much about this other than what I witnessed with my mom, but we have free clinics in our area to help if you don't want to go to a hospital. Surely you have the same? Please take care and per advice from the others, get a support system in place to help you through this. Online support, like this website will be great for later, but for now, face to face close friends and family may be the best way.

Day 3.5 Need Advice of Symptoms

Hey Bobcat, on a job-search related note (I'm coming out of an extended period of unemployment myself), I recommend tweaking your resume (and cover letter, if required) according to the qualifications outlined in each specific job posting. It's a total pain in the butt, but I think one that will probably make your job search much more fruitful. Best of luck to you. It sucks being unemployed. It was over a year for me.

                    Pauly,

Thanks for asking. I am doing much better. On a scale of 1-100, Not at 100% but a lot closer than I was Sunday. Each day I have been consuming a lot of pedialyte to help rehydrate myself. Taking vitamins and last night a made a batch of the Rebecca Katz Magic broth. Just started that last night, so new not sure if that is helping. Eating better, sea legs and the concentration are very much improved.

Having those issues with sleeping. Go to be at 10:00 pm wake up at 12:00 go back pretty quick wake just about on the hour. Then wide awake 3:45-4:00. About how long will this go on? Any suggestions?

Sanchez thanks for being concerned, I think I am going to be alright. I feel much better than when I posted my original post. Glad to read that your mom pulled out of it and has been AF for a year.

Alky, I was updating my resume yesterday. Thought I should go to the public library for a few books on the subject. Was about to make a left hand turned , then $#%, someone ran into to rear of my car. I looked in the back of mirror, a 20ish female on her cell. Why do people feel the need to have companionship while they drive? Well I'm ok, car will be fine.

Day 3.5 Need Advice of Symptoms

Bobcat, I don't know how heavily or regularly you drank, but I drank heavily on nearly a daily basis for years and I can tell you the insomnia is one of the crappiest parts of recovery because it doesn't go away after detox and after your acute withdrawal symptoms have subsided. My psychiatrist gave me a prescription for 100mg of trazodone, which is an SSRI antidepressant, but is often prescribed off-label for insomnia. I don't take it very often because the trazodone hangovers often leave me groggier than alcohol hangovers. I've come to embrace the insomnia. If I can't sleep, I don't try to force it. I log on here, read a book, catch up on my TV shows or work, etc.

Sorry to hear about your accident bobcat. Don't know what's so important that people can't wait until they're parked or out of the car. Glad you're not hurt. Insomnia was one of my biggest symptoms too. Night sweats and restless leg syndrome was part of it. Sleeping much better now though and it's only been 13 days. Hopefully with time you'll get more rest as well. Like Alky says though, don't fight it - get up and do something productive if you can.
                            Take care!

Bobcat, I have read with interest your journey since Sunday. I'm so glad that each day finds you more and more 'back to normal'. It is a process.
I felt flu like the first 2 weeks....I had jumpy legs and just felt like crap...achy. But on Day 13, the skies parted and I felt like a new person. I felt this really WAS something I could do!! My sleep improved, the whole situation improved! Hang in there!!
