    Corner Shop(drinking before 9.00am)

This is such a typical scene in London before 9.00am..... it is funny but really sad at the same time. I have had a couple of these sort of occasions, for me they were some of my lowest moments

    Cute and typical. Sad.

DD, that is a funny video but it rings so true. I cringe watching it though. I didn't go to liquor stores early, but when I did, there was always some kind of absurd plan that I had to make myself look better. I would buy lots of bottles and chat up the cashier to make it look like I was having a party. I would even buy those cute gift bags to make it seem like I was giving the wine as a present. I would ask a sales person about different wines and liquors as though I knew absolutely nothing about them so I must have been buying the wine and liquor for someone else, like my husband.

I live in a state where wine and liquor is only sold in liquor stores and the liquor stores sell absolutely nothing else but liquor, so there is no hiding the reason you are in there. I made sure though that I didn't seem as bad as I really was. I am sure I would have had many more clever strategies if liquor were sold is grocery stores. Oh the possibilities!

Looking we have AL in grocery stores although it is not open for sale until 10am and separated from food although it is right at the checkout. I used all the excuses although did not buy the bags for gifts. What a great idea. NOT! I had 5 different bottle shops where i did exactly the same thing, smiled and joked and made it look like it was not for me. Sad but so very true with all of our stories.

The thing that gets me is he only bought TWO cans of beer. That would never have been enough for me, never. Here you can buy alcohol anywhere and everywhere...Walmart, the gas station, grocery store...

Knowing which beer has the strongest alcohol by volume at the cheapest price per unit of alcohol but pretending you don't know is my trick. "blimey this vintage cider is strong it is 8.2% abv, I didnt notice that when I bought it, I only bought it because it was cheap. I thought it would be weak" the only person fooled by that particular pathetic lie is yours truly, the soft one!

I would buy just 4 cans, hoping that would be enough, then go back or to another shop for another 4............and so on.

We have 24 hour supermarkets BUT if it involves a Sunday (after a certain time Saturday and before a certain time Monday) then you can get really stuck, oh and Bank Holidays and Christmas Days bugger it all up too.

When I was doing the all weekend party thing (think raves but in people's houses), we'd have been up all night and go to the corner shop when it opened at 6am. Back then they weren't supposed to sell it before 9 or 10am or whatever. The nice muslim shop keeper would sell alcohol to the fine upstanding, professional, middle aged friend of ours because he trusted us, then go and say his prayers at sun rise.

We thought we were dead cool.

Drove past there the other day actually, and in fact I have reason to go very close to where we were doing that on a regular basis now. Very wierd but glad I'm in such a place where I can remember and it not lure me back.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

In London as well as the corner shops etc there are many big and little shops, so alcohol is available 24 hours a day, whatever day of the week and even bank holidays/public holidays, even Christmas day ... for me it always available and within easy walking distance too... not good for people like me!

Supermarkets became my downfall. Easy to put some bottles of wine in there with the groceries, nappies, toilet paper etc. Of course after a while in a small town some of the operators get to know you.
And the clanking:H:H And the recycling:H:H

Then the challenge of seeking AL in countries where its not respectable for women to drink...Puts the sleaze into travelling

Thank goodness those days are in the past

Here in Scotland, you can only buy AL legally between 10 am and 10 pm. But I saw a guy with a blue bag from the local corner shop drinking cider in the street at 8.30 the other morning. Ugh!

                      HI BH,
I am amazed you can only buy alcohol between 10.00am and 10pm in Scotland, surely in the cities you can buy it 24 hours a day?
Well done to Scotland if you can't.
Here in London it can now be legally bought in shops 24 hours a day, every day. (This is not a good thing)
