      Sugar Free Roll Call

NS. My playing days are over. While the Alkie side of my blood test results were great my sugar fix took its toll. My blood sugar levels were way up, Time to lay off the carbs and start a low sugar life.

        Hi, TJ

You can do this with diet - don't let them talk you into any of the (nasty with other bad effects) drugs if you can avoid it, ok?
Did you get a glucose meter?
The meters are cheap everywhere and the strips aren't too bad on Amazon.
What amazed me was how much worse my postprandial glucose levels were than my fasting one, the only one routinely checked! It is pretty crazy that the main diagnostic criterion doesn't show up as abnormal until late in the process. No wonder so many people are walking around w/ diabetes and don't know it -- they aren't really being tested for it.

        Hope it goes well! NS

              Sugar Free Roll Call

WOW. A couple days ago, I just had the most insane sugar craving/binge, and made myself sick. A couple days prior, I gave myself a cheat meal, which turned into a sugar binge as well, and then two days later, epic cheat binge. Both times were waaaay too much sugar. It felt very much like a drug or alcohol craving in that I became single-minded in my focus to satiate the urge. Everything else fell away and became non-existent until I could binge.

Both times I stuffed myself til I was sick and the second time, that night, I kept waking up through the night feeling soo bad- my heart was racing and I had to tell myself to breathe... finally got back to sleep. I am not sure if it was the effects of the sugar itself or the sugar withdrawal. But I am guessing I'm feeling withdrawals today- headache, lethargic, etc. All pretty gross and crappy and pretty disruptive to my day.

This is a warning to myself- sugar really is a drug in its own way and I am addicted. Yes, it's not alcohol or nicotine but I need to work on this. I should expect that sugar cravings will attack and I need to just sit and work through them, not satiate them.
Yesterday was Day 1 back to sugar/gluten free, today is Day 2.

NoSugar, I'm assuming by your name and a few previous posts that you have eradicated sugar from your diet? Are you paleo? I have to admit that the genetic history thing makes a lot of sense, but I wonder if it is still beneficial to just seriously limit grains and dairy - as they are such a prominent part of our culture (unless there is a gluten issue). I did so well for two days when I ate very little sugar, and then I gave in and drank a soda followed by candy yesterday - had a difficult night craving AL. (Connection??) Thanks for your support BTW. I hope I can be less self-absorbed with this fight someday and be of more help to others! Thanks!

                        Sugar Free Roll Call

                        Good morning, Kensho

I gave up sugar and sugar-producing carbs a couple years ago due to blood sugar issues. I haven't eaten gluten for a couple decades and so not many processed foods, either b/c until recently, labeling of foods was so poor. I don't eat grains too often and only in small quantities (e.g. Rice) but I eat dairy foods so I'm not strictly paleo. There is no nutritional requirement for carbs so that really isn't a concern.

As I've said, the drives for sugar and AL go hand in hand for me and after you adjust, life without both is great.

You aren't just a taker here - I've seen your posts supporting others. When you write them, you're making that message truer and truer for yourself - rewiring your brain to that of a non --drinker. You're doing great!

Kensho- there's definitely seems to be a strong link between sugar cravings and alcohol cravings, and binges or lack thereof of one can often effect the other. This does make some sense because alcohol is metabolized as sugar in the body. I've found that giving in to one often means giving in to the other, and likewise eradicating one is often helped by also focusing on eradicating the other.

As for me, I've been doing good on my sugar/gluten free diet lately, but today I am beginning with a new trainer and so I'll be tightening it up a bit, so I'm counting today as Day 1.
