Allan, I'm still wondering if you're eating often enough? And I've forgotten whether or not you ear carb-veggies? Potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, etc.?

        Hi LC,

no i don't go crazy with my diet. 1,500-1,750 calories. A large meal for breakfast and a large meal for dinner, with a light lunch and a light snack in between.

I get my carbs from: fruit, veg, chicken peas, kidney beans, brown bread or brown tortilla wrap. No rice or potatoes.

I am never really hungry, but i so get light headed slightly especially in the first couple of weeks. Usually an orange juice quickly fixes it.

As stated earlier i feel absolutely miserable and never full (not hungry). Having a light stomach is an uncomfortable feeling in itself.

          Londoner - Day 1

The plan is to allow myself no more than 10-20% of my calories to come from processed foods. This means I either have a small treat every day or a larger treat once per week.

I need to allow my taste buds to get back to how they should be. I know that has happened when brocolli is full of flavour.

For me - plenty of protein, starches are potato & white rice for me, some good fruit & veg with every meal too.

Eating the rainbow on the veggies too.

Need to get this blood sugar level stable so that I wake up feeling recovered and can workout with high intensity too.

The last few weeks have been terrible on the nutrition front as I have used food as an anti anxiety treatment.

          So, day 1

Almost daily I have to deal with low blood sugar levels. I am a heavy duty cyclist and fairly lean; +/-10% body fat. I train virtually every day. I formerly used AL as a quick (and effective) way to keep my blood sugar balance in check when the low blood sugar comes on late in the day, at about 5 pm, my previous cocktail hour. Now I use some form of natural sugar in a drink with sparkling water. In sugars there is a difference. Sucrose in moderation is OK, has been around for ever, and folks generally don't get fat from it (remember- moderation). However, most modern sodas and "fruit juices" use HFCS-high fructose corn syrup, as their sweetener. This has been going on in the US for about 25 years (I won't bore you with the details) but the obesity rate and use of HFCS is highly correlated. Watch out for sugar substitutes like Splenda as well; no bueno.

The thing about high fructose corn syrup is that it is consumed only in highly processed foods so it is hard to separate those effects. In head to head tests, HFCS is essentially the same as table sugar (sucrose) - equally pretty bad. To eat sucrose in its natural state, you'd need to eat sugar beets or chew on sugar cane. That would probably be fine because the dose you could consume would be very limited.

This video may not be entirely scientifically correct but the overall message is important, I think:

Sug, I saw the uTube video. Thanks for the reference. I always like to hear another opinion. I would presume this has value for lots of folk, but not everyone. And the point that Lustig sort of glossed over is moderation in sugar consumption. There is definitely a case for sugars in our diets. For endurance athletes; marathoners, cyclists (I am in the first two category’s), Tri-athletes and cross-country skiers, simple sugars are, plainly-put a vital part of our athletic lives. I’ll explain.
So . . . I presume you know muscles burn glucose for fuel and our body stores enough glucose in the form of glycogen to fuel about 90 minutes of moderate exercise, and we need to ingest carbohydrates to provide more glucose for longer or more strenuous rides
“Bonking” is what cyclists call hypoglycemia which is the medical term for abnormally low levels of blood glucose. We bonk when we’ve exhausted our glycogen stores in our muscle cells and haven’t ingested enough carbs to produce more blood glucose, and are still riding the bike. Been there many times.
Bonking can be especially deadly for cyclists because our muscles aren’t the only things in our body that burn glucose for fuel. Our brain burns glucose too. That means that not having enough glucose in our blood to fuel the system has mental and emotional effects in addition to physical effects. If blood glucose levels drop too low, the body will act to protect the brain and will begin to shut down the muscles first. However, the muscles won’t completely shut down before the brain begins to be affected and the mental and emotional consequences of bonking can be more dangerous to the cyclist than the physical consequences.
What do we do if we bonk- or are close to it? We need to get our blood glucose levels up and need to do it fast. We ingest simple carbohydrates that can be rapidly processed into blood glucose by the digestive system; the best source for these kinds of carbs are simple carbohydrates/sucrose include energy gels, sugar cubes or sweet candy like gumdrops or jellybeans. Complex carbohydrates like energy bars will take longer to process into blood glucose and will only provide relief in the longer term.
                Thanks!

Hi, OK - very nice 30 day speech in the Toolbox! Thanks for adding it.

I think even Lustig would agree that active exercisers have different requirements (although several pro athletes are now experimenting with training and playing as "fat-burners") and as I posted in another thread today, we aren't all metabolically the same so a global prescription won't work for sugar, fat, or even alcohol.

There are some people who need to essentially avoid sugar and others who seem not to suffer ill effects. The problem I see is that almost no one consumes a truly moderate amount of sugar - especially if they eat processed foods. The current WHO recommendations are for the daily TOTAL added sugar intake to be slightly less than that in 1 can of soda. I'm afraid most people are consuming considerably more than that.

Actually, I think we are more in agreement than not .

Sug, I agree with you. I am really into eating clean, so keep posting this good info as you find it.
                    Thanks!

Well done Skull, I will join you tomorrow. Right now I am eating 214g box of chocolate, cr?me brule and 500g of peanut butter ice cream. My logic is to eat until I can eat no more and try to hold on to that feeling of being sick of eating. Sounds absurd but thats how I quit alcohol....
