I am thrilled to have a sugar buddy! :encouragement:

It is hands down easier to say no thank you versus trying to behave yourself. And I love to bake..
I guess I will start to experiment with sugar substitute recipes, not artifical sweeteners though, honey... molasses... any suggestions?
I must admit I am eating less salt too, but ONLY because I am craving it less. Before I salted everything, now I could care less.

It really is remarkable how my body is reacting to be honest, it mystifies me why people are not talking about it all over the internet? Just stopping with the wine was not enough though, nothing changed. I had to stop with the sugar and voila!

    bizarre!

How long have you been doing this NS?

      HI, El

My approach is to stay away from all forms of sugar - all sweet sugar (cane, beet, honey, molasses, agave, fruit juice) contains fructose, generally in combination with glucose. Fructose is the form of sugar that causes many of the problems as it is metabolized differently than other sugars. Actually, it's metabolism is similar to that of ethanol and many of their consequences are the same (e.g. fatty liver). An entertaining video is Robert Lustig's The Bitter Truth.

More and more information about sugar toxicity and addiction is appearing online but it is a topic people want to face even less than the problems with AL. The parallels between the 2 in terms of addiction are striking. I wish the people who are struggling to gain (or easily maintain) sobriety would do what you did and give a dietary change a try. For some of us it is the missing link. Julia Ross has some interesting online talks about sugar addiction.

I've not eaten gluten since the early 90s and because the substitute foods were gross then, haven't eaten much bread, cake, cookies, pasta, etc. (or many processed foods b/c labeling wasn't good) for a long time. I eliminated sugar almost entirely, other than from occasional fruit, almost 4 years ago.

Pretty crazy that that I saved alcohol for last, isn't it?

Hi El and NS- I missed you guys!

I took a little break from MWO, just been focusing on other things during my morning routine- learning meditation and being present (Tolle). I'm still sugar free, but I've gotten sidetracked eating Quest bars- they are technically sugar free/"healthy" but they are so sweet that when I have them, I crave more, and all other food seems boring in comparison. I think when I'm done with the boxes of Quest bars that I bought I will force myself to not buy more- I think they are sabotaging my progress. It seems that my brain gets short-circuited and out of whack when I eat anything sweetened aside from fruit etc. It just freaks out and wants to only eat more sweets.

That said, I'm still technically not eating sugar, so still considering myself sugar free Day 57

I'm gonna go back now and catch up on this thread. Hope you're all well~!

omg what a day - i was so tired from waking up several times in the night (as indicated above).
it is so weird, we have this fantastic looking apple pie at home and i am not even tempted by it.

i am taking heed about your comments NS- re: honey molasses as well... i bought a whole grain cereal and had a bowl yesterday, i can taste it has added sugar.
normally i would find it bland, now i don't really want to eat it. The first bowl was sort of okay, but the more I eat of it the stronger the added sugar tastes.

i think there is sugar in most processed foods, so I will stick with trying to just eat whole foods.
Breakfast is tricky... any advice? Today I did mango... yesterday toast... (not particularly satisfying...) oatmeal... I guess hot cereals? Advice?

And NS I am amazed you could control yourself while you were still drinking? For me that was simply IMPOSSIBLE.

I sometimes did not manage strict control while I was drinking, El. One consequence of drinking is acute hypoglycemia a couple hours later. I suspect mine was extremely low on occasion (when I overindulged relative to "normal") as I would shovel ice cream or something like that down my throat in a desperate sort of way. So, I would eat real food w/ no added sugar all day and once in awhile totally sabotage myself that night. I haven't had that happen at all since I stopped drinking - anytime I eat sugar now, it is a deliberate choice (which is a great place to be b/c I rarely make it. Like you, sweet stuff doesn't taste all that great to me anymore).

I've never liked breakfast foods (other than eggs), even as a kid, so I've always eaten whatever I've wanted for breakfast - leftovers, meat, cheese, salad, eggs, nuts/nut butters on celery or apples, etc. I usually don't eat until 10:30 or 11 (or later) so perhaps that helps make leftovers more appealing than they would be at 7 am!!

Funny NoSugar! I LOVE left overs for breakfast and I too have a hard time to eat before 11.

I have been away but am still on track.
This time of year is hard though with all the treats around.

I have to figure out which day I started this?
Embarrassed to say I am not sure?

oh and I had a bite of a gingerbread cookie- the first time I ever made them and they are for snack for my art students.
I am not going crazy vigilant and starting over though.
