    Help for a newbie. . .

I just registered today and am having trouble knowing where to start or what to do. I have visited the Newbie Nest and have the same problem of not knowing what to do.

Could someone give me a list of "must do's" to get started on this? I am so tired of day ones and I really want to be successful at not drinking this time.

I am very interested in the hypnosis and meditation concept and would love any advice on that. Is it possible for someone to do that on their own? Is there a guide on this site to help me learn to do it? (self hypnosis or meditating)

Sorry to be asking so much and I thank you in advance for helping out this struggling newbie who sick and tired of being sick and tired. :new::new:

    Welcome, Gloria!
Do you want to post your life journey here?

Have you identified what your goals are?
Do you want to become alcohol free, or learn to moderate drinking?
Or do you not know yet? It's okay not to decide yet- it can be daunting to think that you can NEVER have another drink...

There's a lot to read on here, and you may see yourself in other's stories.

      Hi, Gloria and Welcome:

My recommendations are to check out the tool box - it is under the monthly abstinence thread - there are many ideas and recommendations for getting and staying sober. I also do recommend the Newbies Nest - there tends to be a lot of heavy traffic there and a lot of support for brand new people. Click on the link for the last page. You can read back to see who is there, and then just jump right in - people will welcome you and you will get to know them quickly. Or, just read through some threads and find one that interests you - everyone here is welcoming and supportive.

You've made a great choice to get alcohol out of your life.

Hi Gloria, I'm glad you found us. I find meditation to be a great source of calm in my life. You can find many simple instructions for it online. Basically following your breath with your mind as you breath in and out is "the action". The rest of it happens while you are sitting there.
If you are looking for a book, Thich Nhat Hanh's "The Miracle of Mindfulness" is a very good guide.

Like already mentioned, the Newbies Nest and the Toolbox threads are awesome starting points. This site will give you TOOLS and SUPPORT for your quit. If you are like me, you probably tried a million times without any TOOLS or SUPPORT. They are the game changers.

Yes it can really be done! It is probably the most worth while thing we can do for ourselves. Of course it isn't easy at first, but nothing valuable comes easily. Pour it all away and get all the alcohol out of your space and stay close. You can really have the life you want!

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I will check out the newbie nest again.

I am going through some big changes in my life right now and am afraid I will turn to alcohol to "comfort" me. But I know it doesn't bring comfort, it brings self-hatred and shame and guilt. I don't want to be a drinker. I don't like that person. I have tried this over and over - made it almost 3 years one time. But, I find it hard to get back to any length of time without drinking. I have tried so much but all online because my drinking is done in secret so my recovery has to be in secret. That is the hardest part.

I appreciate your comments and help.

Hi Gloria and welcome. I know how tough it is to get started with the quit but it?s really doable. Your decision to join MWO will bring a lot of comfort and you?ll get to meet some amazing people from all over the world sharing your problem and struggle.

            My ?must do?s?:
            1. Mentally decide and agree that today is DAY 1. (don?t think about tomorrow) use ODAT ? one day at a time mind frame.
            2. Get rid of all the alcohol you have in your house.
            3. Stock up on your favorite foods. I found that the only thing that helped me with the cravings was food (it is quite hard to drink on a full tummy).
            4. Try to make a plan of your daily activities at least for the witching hours (when you normally drink) replace those hours with whatever you like to do (maybe read, watch a film, cook ? you get my point)
            5. Stay close to this web site. Just browse and read threads that interest you. I spent hours reading. I found it very comforting to read experiences of people with different stages of sobriety.
            6. Share your story or share your feelings if you feel comfortable to do so. It?s liberating especially for a secret drinker (like myself).
            7. Be kind to yourself and try not to over think things.

I hope this helps a bit. I wish you luck in your journey.
